11 plus verbal reasoning question.

We've been practicing for the 11 plus verbal reasoning test. Bought gl assessment verbal reasoning explained book to help prepare for it.

One question is... If the code for LANCE is ODQFH. What does ILQ mean?

I'm pretty sure the answer in the back is wrong and what my son out is right. ..so just wondering what everyone here would put as the answer. I'll say what bog answers are after a few guesses.

Thank god I'm not the only one confused by it lol.

I've explained to ds he was wrong and why...so he knows too now x

It’s a good point to learn re 11+ though - to read the question carefully and not make assumptions!

Clairetree1 · 17/06/2018 19:02

It's confused me and they expect 10 yr olds to answer it lol

well, never mind he got it wrong this time, the important thing is he doesn't make the same mistake next time - that's the point of practicing.

ScaredPAD · 17/06/2018 19:05

Ps can anyone recommend any 11+ apps ? I've been googling and haven't a clue!

tootstastic · 17/06/2018 19:07

Ah yes, sorry I stand corrected, looks like you need to go back 3 places instead of forward 3.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/06/2018 19:08

LOT? Counting forward 3 letters each time, as in the example?

mrsFruitLoops · 17/06/2018 19:09

Yes.... I felt he was rushing some of it and not concentrating so we're going to have to work on reading properly and working on accuracy.

I guess we're both learning.

Ah yes, I see. Bloody hell! Good luck OP’s DS!!!

mrsFruitLoops · 17/06/2018 19:32

haha thanks. He's been told he can change his mind about doing the test at any time, even if he's stood outside the exam hall!! His teacher thinks he will thrive at grammar school, and so far he is enjoying the VR practising, This example was the first question he had got wrong, so he's doing ok to say its not a lesson he will learn at school.

Maths, I have no worries about with him, he is working with the higher level year 6 children on maths as it is.

English, we need to work on speed...

LOT?

Oops, should have read the thread first!

The code ones are hard for that very reason. They've tripped DS up a couple of times. I always encourage him to say out loud 'code to word' or 'word to code' so he actively thinks about which way he needs to go.

wentmadinthecountry · 17/06/2018 22:49

Just teach ds the technique - it's foolproof if you follow it and is easy to find on you tube.

BubblesBuddy · 18/06/2018 17:13

Well they have given you the Q. So you know that’s an N. You only have to count back the other two letters. ILQ is the code. It’s not a word, is it? I suggest DS writes out the alphabet very quickly. It is easier if you see it rather than count in your head. Of course he needs to read the question and realise ILQ isn’t a word - it’s the code. It’s good to make the mistakes now though and learn from them.

BubblesBuddy · 18/06/2018 17:14

The Susan Doughtrey Books give full explanations about doing these questions. They take you through them methodically so you get the technique.
