November child, can he start school after September 2018?

Hi,
We are looking for a property at the moment to buy. (waiting to exchange on ours). I would like to move to a town about 7 miles away which would mean a change of school (and hopefully better) for my 6 and 8 year olds.
The school has been unsatisfactory for a long time and is not in a great area. The girls are happy to move and we have discussed it in length.

My boy (5 in November) is due to start the same school in September.
the nursery he is in (connected to the school) is very good and I was wondering if we can delay him starting a new school until he is 5?

The reason I ask is because I've been looking at a new build which will not be finished until November.

I know none of this is ideal but would it be really difficult to do this? (I'm not sure what the legalities are regarding starting school at 5)
It would just mean he wouldn't spend a term in that school and then start again in another.

I doubt we'd be in somewhere by September anyway even if we put in an offer tomorrow on somewhere else.

Any ideas?

Assuming nursery have space for him from september very easy. Just tell the school you no longer need the place. He has to be receiving a suitable full time education from january (the term after he turns 5). You can continue to claim the 15 or 30 hours till then too.

Yeah legally he doesn't have to start until January as it is the term after you turn 5 so that part is fine. Nursery might be trickier as it would depend on spaces and funding they may well be full for next year already (we are at the school nursery I work at) worth asking though.

You can delay to January

Brill thank you. Would it be possible to get funding for him though if he 'could' start in September?
I'll ask at nursery ASAP.
Been to see some houses today and there are a couple I am really interested in. I guess if I act quickly enough it would be possible for September but 'unlikely!'

Would you get him a space in reception at your intended new school? He would come under infant class size and would probably end up on the waiting list.

Oceandegree · 02/06/2018 22:44

That is true madam. There are several 'good' primaries around so would be hoping to get him in.
What do other people do when moving location?
Not very well planned out in terms of timing is it? :(

Are you bothered about having all three children in the same school? If the prospective schools are good you may be hard pressed to find ones which have spaces in the necessary classes, especially since your youngest two will both be KS1 and so limited by infant class size regulations.

Hmm, Wild, It would be tricky if they weren't as I work pretty much F/T atm. The other option is to leave them in their school now and try for next year I guess?
I have a great CM here and she takes and collects them from school every day so it would just mean leaving the new place earlier, dropping them and off to work.
(I am planning on applying for work in the town we are looking at asap but need to hold on to my current job until I get another closer)
