How is your school's communication to parents

because I think our school's communication leaves much to be desired

seems sometimes as though parents are an inconvenience to the smooth running of the school

so what impresses / depresses you about the way your school communicates

and does anyone actually get email communication?

We get a weekly news letter, and can look on the school website for dates, etc. I would really like to know what the class will be studying that term, though. Wish we could be told a the begining of term if they're doing Florence nightlingale, or Romans, or what ever.

We also get a weekly newsletter, which varies in quality depending on how much the teachers decide to contribute to it. The school website is getting better, but like ChocolateFace I would like some curriculum type stuff on there too.

and no to the email question!

dd's school is pretty poor at communication tbh. It used to be better under the previous head.

The website isn't very good in that there is very little information which is of immediate relevance to parents - basic things like term dates are not even on there. There is certainly no communication via email and tbh I think that's fair enough (I think that the number of families with access to a PC is not high at this school)

As for individual class information, I tend to get garbled messages via dd (Yr 1), quite often about 10 minutes before we are due to leave home.

I'm not sure if there is even a school propectus; I've certainly never seen one.

Forgot to say, the governors seem a pretty secretive lot imo - and that does annoy me.

portonovo · 15/05/2007 18:50

We get a curriculum leaflet every half-term - says what that year group will be studying in every subject including P.E., art, music etc.

Newsletters every two weeks, other communications as and when.

No emails - but then I wouldn't really expect it. Many families at our school don't have computers.

Regular curriculum stuff but the dates stuff usually arrives (at most) the week before and then if you work you don't have enough notice and miss stuff.

Forgot to say, we get major dates for the whole year each September - all parents' evenings, sports day, school plays etc, so we can plan ahead.

Relevant circulars in the bookbag which are also posted on the website (I always check the website to make sure I haven't missed any) plus a weekly newsletter, which has only just been introduced. The curriculum / themes for the term for each year are also posted on the website, together with dates for the year ahead. We get a printed calendar each term with dates of all trips, events and even sports fixtures, which really helps when planning time off from work. All this info is excellent, although didn't stop the school waiting until 4.15pm the other day to phone and say that DS1's guitar lesson (4 to 4.30pm) had been cancelled and poor DS1 had just been hanging around in the school library waiting for someone to collect him.

Pretty good at DD's school I think. At the start of each term we get a note sent home with dates of everything occuring in that term. We also get a newsletter once every half term which has news plus reminders of forth coming events. We then have noted about other stuff either written in the reading record book or inside their message folder (both brought home daily).

In the cloakroom there is a white board with other bits of information and reminders written on it.

Each half term the class teacher sends home a note about what things will be covered during the coming weeks. For her year group this is also on the website.

The website includes parent's information such as the newsletters, term dates, diary for each term, menu plans, etc.

There is a parent's evening twice a year and a written report three times a year.

The class teacher is available before and after school whenever you need to chat to them.

Nothing by e-mail though.

Ours sounds relatively good in the scheme of things.

Weekly newsletter , with menu and summary of specific events and matches int he coming 7 days - you can sign up for email . Also accessible via the school websoite , when it works properly !

Termly we receive a Calendar of Events , matches, meetings plus the term dates for the next 3 terms.

Any adhoc messages are on a wipeboard or by note in the bookbag for example re: details of themes and plans from the year teachers or notice on the classroom door (such as if special kit required).

Termly parent/teacher meetings and written reports once a year for up to Year 2 , grades/reports termly beyond Year 3.

SparklePrincess · 17/05/2007 18:38

Im surprised at how many of you get a weekly newsletter. Ours is once a month.

MrsWho · 17/05/2007 19:28
