Would you repeat the year?

Basically, my child started reception age 3, so one year earlier then he would have in the British system because he is attending a bilingual school. There are two ways to enter, through the French system (which go by calendar year) and through British (which go September to September). The French system pays and the British system gets in free. My son has made good friends, however, as its an international school a lot of kids come and go, two friends of his have already left, with one moving to France and the other to the US. Academically, I do think he would benefit to repeat as he is not strong in writing and still does not get reading. I just worry if he will feel sad or wonder why he is repeating. He loves his teacher so when I asked if he would like to repeat the year and be with the teacher again he has said yes, but I did not explain the other children will move on (yet). Please give me your thoughts.

Pros:
He started reception age 3 and now if he repeats he will be age 4 and more ready academically
He is not able to read and his writing is quite messy
Save 8.5 k a year (thats 60k total!) for same education

Cons:
He is in a good class and thriving with loads of friends, however the friends could come and go, with two already leaving
He might notice and wonder why he is left behind. He has been in different nurseries, so its not like it would be difficult for him to make new friends.

Is this in the UK or elsewhere?? 3 is too young for reception, reading and writing, IMO. DS did not get either at 3 but by 4 1/2 picked it up easily.

Am guessing this might be EdW? And its associated state-funded arm? If so ... have you got an offer from state-funded?? Honestly, I'd be sorely tempted if so. What's not to like.

Its exactly like edw, so yes we got a state funded offer! I never thought we would, as it is lottery and we were not lucky with our first and had to go the private route. I think we will go for it, as I do not know anyone who would turn down the offer! I have been dreaming about getting this opportunity for years and was devastated the first time around when it did not happen, but ultimately it was okay as we were able to get a spot the other way for our first DC. I was shocked when I the email saying we were offered our first choice for our second DC.

Sounds like a no-brainer to me 😉. Best of luck!

If you make him repeat the worst that could happen is that you regret it for a year. If you don't you may regret it for the next 15. In your situation I would definitely do it.

I would repeat without a second thought.

Mamabear12 · 16/04/2018 22:39

Okay, thanks. In my gut, I think its best to repeat, but it helps to hear (or read) others input as well (especially when it confirms that my gut is right!).

I just want whats best for my boy and I sure do hope Im making the right decision.
