Becoming a primary school teacher

Hello, does anyone know the route that someone could take to become a primary school teacher when they have GCSEs, but no A levels? It’s for my brother, who has been working abroad in an unrelated field since he did his GCSEs 15 years ago. Any help or advice really appreciated!

Has he got a degree? He will either need to do a BEd or if he has a different degree he could do a PGCE.

Hi Hopeful, thanks so much for the reply! He does not have a degree. Is the BEd possible without A levels? Thanks again!

Possible if he has another Level3 qualification + relevant experience.

Hello Back! Thanks for responding. He would be looking to get some experience before he starts. No other qualifications other than GCSEs though. Would he have to do A levels before he could do the B Ed?

Yes, the BEd is a degree. He’d need a levels (or equivalent) first.

He would need alevels or equivalent qualifications to get on a BEd course. GCSEs are a legal minimum requirement for QTS but to get a course place he will need a levels or BTEC extended diploma for example.

Thank you Pink and Purple!

I did a degree through the OU, with no A levels (OU has no entry requirements) and then got accepted for a School Direct course, I've been working as a TA through my degree to build up experience but there are a few options, details here

I'm not a teacher yet and it has been a long road, I ended up spending a term employed as a dinner lady while volunteering in class just to get the experience to get a TA job to get the experience to get a salaried course, which will be another 2 years.

He'll need English, Maths and Science GCSEs grade C or above as well.

I am a teacher and I don't have A levels.
I did an Open University degree followed by a PGCE.
