My dd is 4 tomorrow and at pre school.

She should be going to primary school this september but have had no notification of choices of school.
When does this happen please?

when did you apply?

bitofadilemma · 10/05/2007 16:52

you need to call the council and see, I would have thought you should have been told by now

bitofadilemma · 10/05/2007 16:56

err
it's just occurred to meYou did apply didn't you? It's just your post is worded as if you are waiting for them to write to you and tell you the choices, rather than which one you have been given.

mankyscotslass · 10/05/2007 17:00

I was about to ask the same question, you have to apply round about Cristmas/January time here, and are told in March......
Definetely worth calling the lea and finding out whats going on

RedLorryYellowLorry · 10/05/2007 17:03

We have just been notified of our allocated school. However we had to apply by end Jan this year. Have you had anything via the pre-school?

If she is only 4 tomorrow, she won't be going to primary school until January 2008. You should have had a letter asking you to apply and your preferences. As another mum has said, normally letters are sent out at Xmas and you have until end of January to fill them out for admission the following year. We got the results in March and ds starts next January. Phone your local education authority if you are not sure.

Depends on your area . Some LEA application processes will have closed last Autumn with results between Christmas and Easter, others are later deadlines but it is usually sorted by now even for mid year starters. Appeals may still be ongoing. Scotland is different though. Unless you moved into the area quite recently you should have automatically received an application pack with all the forms and deadlines and/or been able to do so online.

JonesTheSteam · 10/05/2007 17:10

sarahlou - that's not true where I live - they start reception the september after they are 4 - even if they are 4 on August 31st.

Ladymuck · 10/05/2007 17:12

Which LEA are you in?

bitofadilemma · 10/05/2007 17:14

Also I don't think you get a letter, well youdon't here, it's up to you to apply!

mankyscotslass · 10/05/2007 17:17

My lo was only 4 last may, started reception last September...

sunflowervalley · 10/05/2007 17:56

Hi everyone,thanks for your replys.

No I did'nt apply I thought a letter with the options would be posted to me.

Will contact the LEA and see what they say.

I know I should have thought about this much sooner but the time just passes and it always seemed ages away and she seems so young to be going to primary.

I should have known this as my ds is in primary and is an August birthday so he started at just 4.
In his case we had a letter to ask which school we prefered but can't remember when that came before he actually went to school.

Will see what I can find out tomorrow.

This makes me sound like an awful mother but I think to be honest had put it to the back of my mind and it's come around so quickly.

I would actually start with your ds's school as I assume that you will want your dd to go there. If it is not full for reception then you may get a place there - if not then you will want to ensure that the fact that she is a sibling is registered as it should push you to the top of the waiting list.

Personally I'm astounded that you haven't been anywhere that would have prompted you to do this - there have been posters up at chirch, in the library, at preschool and the local toddler groups and at the doctors surgery. But then I've never quite understood those women who never knew that they were pg either.

noonar · 10/05/2007 18:54

oh sunflower poor you, you have had your head in the sand, havent you? we DEF got a letter through before dd1 started school.

if you have a sibling link at the school - if ds is still ther- you should be ok.

Troutpout · 10/05/2007 19:08

Sunflower ...you are not awful
Loads at my dd's playgroup have got caught out this year. Particularly those with older children already at the school (ie Yr 1). The older child was sent a letter...but the system has changed since then and you now have to apply. We had 8 children with older siblings without a place.
It was poorly thought out in cheshire (don't know about elsewhere0...with no safety net to catch people who didn't know they had to apply.

sunflowervalley · 10/05/2007 19:32

noonar-hopefully we will get a place,DS is still at the school in year 1.

Ladymuck-it is not that black and white and a bit confused with the comparison of women who don't know they are pregnant.

Have had a stressful time this past year with my DS and the school.
My DS has special needs and have had to fight to get him approriate help within that school.
We are currently applying for a statement and have had numerous meetings with the school,LEA etc .

I know the onus is on me but I honestly believed a letter would come through as did for my DS.

Troutpout-Thanks for your reply,it has made me feel a bit less irresponsible to know I'm not the only one.
My son is in year 1 and as I said I had to fight for his place within that year because of his special needs.

I have e mailed thre council and will ring tomorrow to see what I can do.

It also doesn't help that the system/dates keep changing. When ds1 (Yr2) started school you had to apply by mid-March and were notified in June. This time around applications had to be in for December. I'm not surprised that those with older children get confused.

Good luck, sunflowervalley.

sunflowervalley · 11/05/2007 11:20

Thanks coppertop

Good news, got a reply to my e mail this morning and they are sending a letter of confirmation for DD of a place at the same school as DS.

Feel really relieved now and will hopefully be really good for DS as well to know his little sister is at the same school.
