Has anyone moved children mid year to what they consider a 'better' school?

Hi all,

This is a long way off for my kids (twins) but just thinking about school admissions. It seems highly unlikely id get places on offer day at the school i like as out of catchment however the local authority have said i dont live too far out and there may be spaces later in the year.

I just wondered if anyone has moved children mid year at reception. I think with twins it should be easier as they have each other and im assuming (GULP) that two spaces would be made available. Im just thinking to take whatever i get and then move if something becomes available. Should nothing come up in the first year, i thought to look at private if the current school isnt suitable. I just wondered if anyone had similar experiences.

Check the twins policy.

Generally I think places will take the second twin as an 'excepted' child and #31 in a class, but I don't know whether that is mandated.

Over the years at my DD's primary, children came and went in the class. They were all assimilated pretty quickly.

You should definitely accept any offered place. If they are young in year and you are very hopeful of being offered from the waiting list, you can defer start until Christmas (or Easter for summer borns).

Twins are dealt with differently be different schools. Check the admission criteria of all the schools you are interested in, both the one you will probably get, the one you want to move to plus perhaps a few other locals. Don't assume all schools will make an extra place available for a twin. Don't expect to be covered by the sibling criteria - this is usually for a younger sibling of a child already at the school. If it is not clear on twins in their admission criteria then call the school and ask them. For the school you want to eventually move to be aware that two places may and probably won't come up at the same time.
