Ideas for TA job interview

Hi,
I have an interview for a TA and was asked to prepare a high quality text to share with a group of Year 3 children. That would last for approximately 10 mins.
Does anyone have any ideas please?

Roahl dahl features heavily in year 3.

A high quality picture book would be good with year 3 - Anthony Browne is always good for discussion.

I worked as a TA in year 3 last year. We used Gorilla by Anthony Browne as one of our texts.

My Y3 DD's class are reading Charlotte's Web.

ellaballoo · 16/03/2018 18:10

Do you have to read the story or prepare an activity ?
Is it with the whole class ?

ellaballoo · 16/03/2018 18:10

Sorry , just read it properly and saw it was for a group .

zgaze · 16/03/2018 18:15

Do you have to prepare an activity or just read to them? Our yr 3s are doing work based around the Iron Giant by Ted Hughes at the moment

Jito75 · 16/03/2018 20:25

Not much more information was given to me. I suppose I’ll get children to take turns in reading 1 chapter then ask questions.

Kash75 · 16/03/2018 20:28

Nothing has been mention about activity. I suppose the children will need to take turns in reading and then I will ask questions and have a good discussion.

To do in 10 mins, I would second Antony Browne The Tunnel. Great for teaching the structure of an adventure story (or narrative in general). Loads of teaching resources for it on Twinkl.

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 16/03/2018 20:37

Or choose and amazing poem.

Fluffybat · 17/03/2018 14:02

Antony Browne or Ted Huges would be fantastic for Yr3.

Fairenuff · 17/03/2018 18:23

Sounds like an odd activity. The teacher should have already picked the piece of writing and you should be told what the learning objective is.

Trialsmum · 17/03/2018 18:30

Hmmm, if you want them to read a page each of a chapter then you’ll need a copy for each of them. I second the idea of a longish poem or even a non fiction text that is a few pages long.

Make sure you have a copy for each child, a list of questions you are going to ask as well as how you will introduce the text and finish of the task (I wrote a lesson plan for my last interview and provided a copy for the observing teacher), some sort of resource eg pictures, objects related to the text so it’s not one dimensional and a sticker for each child at the end.

Will you know how well the group can read? What happens if a child is not a confident reader?

SprinkleSomeSparkles · 17/03/2018 18:48

Email the head and see what their topic is at the moment, use that to help you choose some relevant text. That will help you engage with them and ask questions about their learning. Good luck!

I was about to say similar - my ds is in yr 3, and wouldn't be able to read any of the texts mentioned independently.

Misleadorlie · 18/03/2018 18:35

So you’re basically running a mini lesson?
Surely the planning and prep is done by the teacher and then you deliver it based on their instructions.
Sounds like they’re wanting a teacher but to pay a TA salary.
I’d be very wary!
