Worst bugs your DC caught in school?

My ds is 5 and for a few months has been catching colds from reception every other week. I took him to the gp and they've done a blood test and said he had flu like symptoms and some sort of infection so prescribed amoxicillin. He's doing a lot better now and seems to have recovered but they still requested a second blood test because the first said everything was normal apart from high platelet at 609, second blood test 2 weeks later said platelet was at 490 also his glands on his neck haven't gone away, she said it could take up to a month

She's requesting another test in 4 weeks to make sure it keeps going down. I'm very nervous and stressed, I've googled high platelet and it's said anemia, cancer, ect

Does anyone have any children who have had experience with this issue?

Also, how often and what kind of viruses does your DC bring home?

For reception kids I really noticed a difference between kids who had been at nursery in their toddler years and kids who hadn't. Those who hadn't spent more time off in reception as their immunity to all the bugs was not as strong.

ChristineC320 · 02/03/2018 17:45

He did go to nursery at age 3 but he only went mon-wed so if he did catch something like a stomach bug or cold he had the rest of the week to recover.

My ds had been admitted countless times for simple viral infections when he was younger. Once the virus got into his leg muscle and he couldn't walk.
It definitely gets better with age.
GP keeping eye and testing is a good thing.

When DD1 was 6 she had raised gland everywhere, in her groin, neck, armpits and they stayed raised for weeks. We were referred to paediatrics at local hospital where they wanted to rule out leukaemia or anything else nasty. The results were fine so we didn’t have the platelet issue, and the doctor said it was a reaction to having one viral illness after another. It had a name, I can’t remember it now. The glands did stay raised for quite a number of weeks. They are just repeat testing to be safe I think, they don’t like to take any chances. Try not to worry.

I work in reception, it is like a little greenhouse for bugs and some children do just catch everything. Sadly so do some staff, when I first started I had colds pretty much constantly for months. Being ill for a long time can mean it takes ages for glands to go back down and cause a high platelet count, they are probably just being careful because he is little.

Try not to worry, google does tend to flash up worse case scenarios for any symptoms.

My son was continually ill in nursery and reception- and hospitalised twice wth pneumonia

softkittywarmkitty28 · 04/03/2018 07:44

Mine was constantly ill with chest infections and sick bugs in reception, she also had a bad bout of scarlet fever and was ill for weeks with it.

Good news is it does improve, she's in year 4 now and hasn't had a sick day this school year and maybe 1 day last year

user789653241 · 04/03/2018 07:53

Yes, totally agree with soft, I forgot to mention on my post, my ds hasn't taken any days off sick nor admitted to hospital due to viral infections since yr3. He is yr5 now.

Neck glands can be caused by ear infections/adenoids.
My dd caught croup at nursery which is nasty. Causing ear infections

Well most I can't tell they caught from school though. Dd1 and ds did definitely get chickenpox from school/preschool (dd2 caught it from dd1 when she was a baby).

My ds sounds similar to your ds though.
He's had ear infections since he was 10 weeks old, and three lots of grommets.
When he was about 8yo he stopped getting so many ear infections (although he still has glue ear) and each winter since then he's had from about December through to March continuous mild illnesses. I'm talking about slight temperature (37.8 type level), aches and pains in various places especially his head, and a general lack of appetite, tiredness and not-being-quite-rightness.
He's had tests each year and nothing other than allergies and general infection has been found. One of his allergies is to the magic cream they use for the blood tests, which was an interesting one as his arms swelled up, but the other is dust mite, so can't totally eliminate that one.
The first year he was so bad the school offered him to be on half time school as he was just dropping to sleep in the afternoon. He'd often be asleep 5 minutes after I picked him up at lunchtime.

He's just been tested for Glandular fever this time as all his glands are up, but no still general infection.

The GP has referred him to a paediatrician this time. Part of me thinks (this is what I said to the GP) that he gets one bug, that pulls him down and so he just picks up each one that goes round. Because
he's already a bit down, a little one that my older ones don't notice pulls him down enough to be noticeable.
Then part of me wonders if he's got some underlying thing that means he catches everything. Which is why they're referring him. I'd just like him to be well. Sad

My oldest never catches anything, well almost anything, she did get something this year but carried on. Dd2 gets migraines but never has been like ds.

ChristineC320 · 04/03/2018 14:02

My oldest never catches anything, she's in Y4, my ds has been ill all winter and every week it's something new, I'm getting to the point where on Mondays I'm nervous and dreading about what he may bring home and having to deal with his moaning about not feeling well and getting up in the night to make sure he's alright and give him water or maybe calpol if needed. I have been getting strict about hand washing with warm water and soap as soon as they walk through the door and not missing a bath before bed during the school days, and this week he hasn't had a runny nose or bad cough Grin hopefully this flu and cold season will be over soon Wine

Witchend, we have almost exactly that dec-mar coughing, though not actually been ill this year. Then usually ear infections mid feb to mid mar. She also seems to get more tired than other kids. We had her on omega3 vitamins this year and that seems to have helped.
It seems to be the months the heating is on.
Did they test for food allergies? as dd probably has soy allergy. Which can cause reflux which leads to ear infections.
She did develop a heart murmur from one of the ear infections.
It may be that she will get asthma with the coughing etc.
She was completely health before starting nursery.

I think younger siblings are even more likely to get ear infections because more bugs are brought home to them.

Witchend · 04/03/2018 20:06

Naty, he's been extensively tested for allergies at several points. he is majorly allergic to dust mites, probably allergic to cat hair (we don't have one at home, and they said they thought it was likely but he didn't have enough contact to completely say) and definitely allergic to magic cream. No food allergies, and they tested for milk definitely.

He's been on vitamins this year and it's not made a huge difference except his vit D was very good rather than just okay.

My twins were 6 weeks prem and up to age 3 dt1 was on oxgygen in hospital every winter. They did 15 hours a week at pre school from age 3.5 (September born). They got a few illnesses but nothing terrible.

They started reception in September at age 5 and are yet to have one illness, not even a sniffle. We have been so lucky. They are also in different classes so exposed to double the viruses I guess.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 06/03/2018 22:00

He brought home flu from nursery. We both caught it but he didn’t. We had to get inlaws to take him to school.
