Break time during beast from the east

How do you feel about your children going outside several times a day during the school week for break during this cold?

My son is in reception and he has just missed a whole week of school recently due to the flu. He's recovered and back to school and to be honest the thought of him going outside to play in this cold is making me nervous.

I doubt they will be, as it’s a health & safety issue with slippery paths/play areas rather than being too cold.

ChristineC320 · 28/02/2018 07:03

They were sent outside to play yesterday while it was still snowing! And on Monday as well and he came home coughing non stop

No such thing as bad weather only bad clothing.

I don’t want my children inside this weather- I want them outside and all wrapped up during break times.

Your child stands more chance of getting more infections cooped up inside with multiple other children than they do from being outside in the fresh air.

Let them enjoy being a child.

Itchytights · 28/02/2018 07:04

Trouble is there is too much elf n safety these days n killjoys because if precious snowflake falls over or slips , the school is liable.

Sad times.

Arapaima · 28/02/2018 07:04

My DC have been having outside play so far this week, I think it’s fine personally but chat to the teacher if you’re worried.

Sirzy · 28/02/2018 07:04

Our school didn’t play out yesterday because there was too much snow on the playground. He is a severe asthmatic so I have asked for them to give extra inhaler before going out this week and to keep a close eye on him (which they do anyway) but wrapped up properly there is no reason they shouldn’t be getting some fresh air.

ChristineC320 · 28/02/2018 07:06

Sometimes the teachers don't bother to make sure the children are wrapped up, I've walked past the school after grocery shopping and seen children wearing no coats in freezing weather. That's why I feel anxious. I could tell him to wrap up but he's only 5 so he doesn't wrap himself as good as I would if that makes sense

Agree with itchy. My son was outside for his after school sports club yesterday.

ChristineC320 · 28/02/2018 07:08

Meanwhile teachers are standing watching the children from the doorway wearing big coats hats and scarves. Doesn't really seem fair to men but I guess I'm a snowflake who cares too much about my kids health itchytights and I'm not sorry

I live in the frozen north and I have no problems with the kids going out in this. Here it isn't any colder than any other winter.

ShiftyMcGifty · 28/02/2018 07:10

If you don’t trust his teachers to help him with his coat and you feel he is too ill to go outside, then keep him home.

HoobleDooble · 28/02/2018 07:14

I hope they're letting ours out at playtime, we don't get snow often enough for them to enjoy playing in it. I remember how much fun we had back in the 70s/early 80s (when schools never closed for snow). Snowball fights, making deathslides the full length of the playground and walking there and back in my wellies with my slippers in a bag. In fact DS has just confirmed they were out yesterday but they could only throw snowballs at each other's feet.

anxious2017 · 28/02/2018 07:16

I'd expect a Reception child to be able to put on their own coat and hat.

ChristineC320 · 28/02/2018 07:17

I'll try and stop being so over protective and let him join his friends outside, I guess I'm just a little old school. My family is Spanish and come from a tropical Miami, fl so living here in England with my husband is definitely a big change. It's just the constant coughing after him being out in the cold that had me second guessing. My daughter is absolutely fine when she goes outside so maybe it's something I should speak to his gp about. Possible asthma? Idk Confused

I would ask the teacher to remind him to put his coat on as he has been ill. Also agree if he is that ill then don’t send him in at all.

Sirzy · 28/02/2018 07:18

Give him a scarf or buff to cover his mouth with if necessary.

ChristineC320 · 28/02/2018 07:19

He can put his own coat and hat on. I was referring to him wrapping up with a scarf and gloves. My son doesn't even bother using them if I'm not around.

Constant coughing from the cold is a sign of asthma, I have it and need to take an inhaler every day in the winter (but not often at all in summer.)

Seeing gp is not a bad idea.

Regards them being cold, even if they aren't as wrapped up as we would like, at break times they run around like mad things anyway so are much warmer than we would be just standing or walking.

dementedpixie · 28/02/2018 07:32

Ours don't let them out if there is rain or snow. Schools are off today here anyway

MsAwesomeDragon · 28/02/2018 07:34

When we had snow a couple of weeks ago dd's school took them all out to play in it as soon as they'd done the register. They were worried it would all melt before the kids had a chance to play with it Grin. I think it's great, most kids love playing in the snow, building snow men etc. Dd is hoping they do the same today. She will be well wrapped up, with wellies on.

You can ask the teacher to make sure he is properly wrapped up if that's what you're worried about.

anxious2017 · 28/02/2018 07:39

Unless he's putting his hands in snow, I wouldn't worry about gloves and our children aren't allowed scarves as they're a hazard. Hat and coat should be fine.

If he's picking up snow, could you run mittens on a cord through his coat? That way they'd be dangling at his sleeves so he'd be able to wear them easily and have a constant reminder that they're there.

RebelRogue · 28/02/2018 07:42

We had outside play. We insist kids put their coat on..and there's loads of moaning about that but it gets done. Except for the ones that actually did not bring a coat in. And there were some girl in socks and skirts. They came to school that way. We kept some in at lunch play because it's longer, but they need their run around time and fresh air. I can't magic up coats out of nowhere.

Natsku · 28/02/2018 07:46

Agree that constant coughing in the cold is a sign of asthma, best get him checked out.

Playing out in the snow is so lovely and UK kids get so few chances to do that, would be a shame if they were kept inside but if they're not wearing coats etc. I can see why you would be concerned. I'd just stress to your son the importance of wrapping up warm. Dressed up properly they can play out in very cold weather - DD was playing out in -20 yesterday.

SuperMam123 · 28/02/2018 07:46

Hi, I always have the same worries about DS playing out in this weather. He too was out playing in the snow yesterday and they play out in the rain. I asked the teacher to make sure he’s wrapped up in the bad weather and he does have the option to go inside if he wants to. I second the comment about possibly asthma if he’s constantly coughing in the winter, it lowers the immune system too in winter so more colds. I too have asthma.
