At what age are children allowed to walk to school on their own?

Whenever you feel your child is ready and can be trusted. There is no 'allowed' age.

I don't think school know who walks there by themselves but our school policy is they have to be released at the end of the day to an over 16 until they are in year 3.

It probably depends on the school our school will not allow it till yr 6 and even then they have to take a test first

How do they know how the children arrive? Going home I can understand how they can police it but how they arrive is in their own time not school time so if a child turns up at the gates without an adult what do they do?

What kind of test is given???

My school expected infant age children to be accompanied into the playground and delivered in person in to class.

Its a road safety test and stranger danger type test. They stand at the gates about 4 members of staff observing in the mornings

So the staff can see that for the small part of the journey they can see from the gates the child crosses the road properly and doesn't speak to strangers?! Most random thing I have heard today.

Infant school they insisted on you dropped off and picking up.
Juniors (separate school) they come in at the start of the day and let them all out at the end of the day. There isn't usually even a teacher on the gate.

Mostly years 3/4 are picked up/dropped off from near the school, but not actually the school gates. Year 5 begin to walk in small groups from a short distance, and some year 6s walk in groups.
Dd2 walked to and from school in year 3 with year 6 big sister. No one would have worried.

They say they contact anyone by 10am if a child isn't at school and they haven't got a reason. And they do. I got once (due to a mix up, not child going missing) 3 texts and 4 emails within about 5 minutes. I got a further 2 texts and an email in the following 5 minutes despite being on the phone to tell them they'd made a mistake.

The school has no remit to decide whether a child walks home on their own or not. That said checking road safety awareness is a good idea.
