Hi so DD has moved on to chapter books which arent actually on the reading tree etc just very long 270 pages. Doesnt have any problem reading them just wondering if they are still meant to be reading them out loud to parents or if people just let them read it in their heads and ask questions to ensure they are engaging with the story.

Children should read aloud to parents throughout Primary school. Most people stop listening and shai g books once the child is reading fairly fluently for their age ...it's a mistake .

We do a mixture with longer reading books.

Sometimes we take turns reading a page each for the first couple of chapters. It's a good opportunity to check pronunciation (including character names and place names) or to talk about when/where the book is set.

After that, DD reads the rest by herself but tells me later what happened in the story. If she comes across any words that she doesn't understand or can't pronounce she either looks them up in the dictionary or asks me.

I'm not sure it's realistic to read the entire book out loud but equally I like to make sure that DD doesn't make up the pronunciation as she goes along.

I didn't say read the whole book aloud just that it is important to continue to listen to your child read aloud long after you think they can read to themselves

I think we x-posted, Norestformrz. Only the OP's post was there when I pressed the button.

Zelenka that sounds like a good way of doing things. Good tip
