Guided reading.

Ds is in Reception. They have one book per week and aren't allowed to change it before Thursday which is book changing day. The thing is though the guided reading sessions in school use this same book every time, as well as is reading it at home. Does this sound right to you for a reception class. Ds is fluent after reading the book twice (and has good understanding) so he's getting very bored with reading the same thing over and over.
Also, if a child forgets their book on Thursday they don't get the book for the following week at all (thought maybe it could be kept in school or given once the old book is returned) but no they just miss out on that week's book all together.
Does this sound right to you? Perhaps guided reading isn't much of a thing in Reception?

In my son's school in Reception they changed reading books daily if we wrote in his book that he'd read the book. I think they did guided reading once a week in smaller groups based on ability. I would definitely speak to the school as it sounds as though your DS is very capable and not being stretched.

Ok once a week would explain it, if they introduce the book via a guided read on Thursday then bring it home. I kind of thought they did it every day Grin
He could definitely cope with a slightly faster pace but I guess they have to keep groups of children all moving at the same rate do they?

Lol cat!! Grin
That's weird though of they've been changing them.
I realise that they can't have a different arrangement for every child in the class but that's a bit arbitrary. It'd work on shorter books but are you still supposed to plough through the same book three times when they're quite long? I sometimes think school reading books turn children off reading as they can get so boring!!

My son gets two books a week and they get changed every Monday along with one they pick from the library for fun.
I've bought him some off amazon and eBay the oxford reading tree ones which are the ones he is reading at school at the minute to add a bit of variety! X

DD used to get her reading book changed every day in Reception. I don't know whether they did guided reading though.

She's now in Yr2 and they've just started asking for books to be read twice. Something to do with them having to complete a quiz on the computer after they've read each book.
