Ds is struggling with this side of Maths. Have to admit, I’ve never been very good at it either.

Any online resources you can recommend?

He’s great at arithmetic etc it’s just when he’s faced with a word problem he seems to struggle. I think sometimes it’s the effort of finding the answer which could be the issue too Hmm

My ds used to struggle with word problems. Exposure and repetition did help.

Thanks Irvine.

Norest, thank you.

This doesn’t come easy to me either and I’m trying to be confident in front of Ds.

I like the papers which also give you the answers but still, I looked at the egg and toast question and my mind just goes blank. I can’t confidently sit down with Ds until I’ve fathomed out what the heck I’m talking about. It really doesn’t come easy to me either, which I know is really bad, but that stems from my poor Maths education. CSE Grade 4!

I don’t want Ds to know this about me but my mask is slowly slipping.

One egg on toast is £1:94 so two eggs on two slices of toast is £3.88 three eggs on two slices of toast is £5.00 to find cost of an egg subtract £3.88 from £5.00 - £1.12 then subtract that from cost of one slice of toast and one egg £1.94-£1.12 cost of an egg is 82p

That’s a great help, norest, thank you.

Ds has mentioned nothing about bar models, it’s a useful tool.

I seriously wouldn’t mind taking a Maths course for myself.

Op, that's what I am doing now, learning maths myself again. It's seriously enjoyable.

GentleJones · 28/01/2018 14:03

Irvine, I would love to get to the stage where I thought it was enjoyable, rather than being scared of it.

Good for you.

I mean, how embarrassing is it that I’m beginning to ask questions about Y6 homework. Blush

Gentle, sending you 🌷I still break out in a cold sweat thinking about these kind of maths problems (and have passed an MSc) I truly do not care how long it takes a number of men to dig a hole of any depth, or how long it took to fill a specified sizes bath with baked beans, because hopefully they will never be relevant in my daily life 😂

GentleJones · 28/01/2018 16:33

4cats, glad I’m not the only one Grin If these problems involved Gin or Cake then it might be worth trying to work things out Wink

Try Nrich website too.

BlueChampagne · 29/01/2018 12:56

We've found this is a useful book to have around: maths dictionary, though it provides facts not reasoning. But for restoring long forgotten facts, it's great! Recently taken up residence in DS1's bedroom.

megletthesecond · 29/01/2018 17:37

marking my place. DS could do with some extra support in this area.

GentleJones · 29/01/2018 17:52

BlueChamp, thankyou, just ordered! Great price too.

And thanks for the recommended links, Norest and 0ellen

If I can accomplish one thing I would dearly love my Ds to have a love of Maths and not a fear like I’ve always had. Up to now he’s been pretty strong at Maths but reasoning has somehow stopped him in his tracks, I don’t want his confidence to be knocked. It’s important therefore that I can help him and know that I’m showing him correctly & not confusing him (which I’ve sometimes done - hey, 80’s school leaver here Grin times have changed).

So thank you all for helping, really do appreciate it.

Meglet, the more the merrier Smile

Very interesting Mrz. I have done the KS2 doc and thought some of them were demanding. Are they supposed to be done at primary by everybody or is some kind of extension work?

GentleJones · 30/01/2018 17:49

Will there be a whole SATs Reasoning paper?

Love the bar model method, makes
so much more sense when it’s illustrated like this.
