DD1 was a free reader at this age, the only one in her class, and considered Gifted and Talented. By the time she hit secondary school everyone had either caught up or overtaken her. She did the International Baccalaureate last year and did OK. Not remotely brilliantly, but OK, and is off to Warwick next year to do French. Two of her much “slower” classmates from primary are doing maths at Cambridge! So it all evens out in the end.

Turquoise.

brilliotic · 28/01/2018 11:37

DS was on purple in January of Y1.

The book bands the children are on at his school have little relation to their actual abilities though, as since Y1 all children were made to read all books of every level; so their book band is purely a result of a) where they were at end of reception; and b) how many books they read per week.

"Blue- for a smart but not child prodigy kid at a bog standard primary in a pleasant working class area."

Thanks for adding the kind of context that is usually missing from Mumsnet and which actually helps the OP to gauge where they are compared to others (often what they are fishing for).

Everyone take note!

Ds’ school is in poor area with low starting points for lots of kids. He’s in top group of year for reading and was sent to year above for a while.

Pattylogic · 28/01/2018 13:03

I’m a y1 teacher and children in my class range from red to purple level, with blue to orange being the typical range at this point in the year.

Foxedme · 28/01/2018 14:27

True, But also what I've stated is also true.

Naty1 · 28/01/2018 16:15

Gold recently but free reading at home chapter books also read project x books up to grey /brown level.
Her year seem to range from purple down to blue etc.
Imo it doesnt really matter after about turquoise as they can read anything.

Roomba · 28/01/2018 16:38

DS has just gone on to ORT band 7 (turquoise I think?) . He's 6 at the end of July. He's one of the more advanced readers in his particular class (not a boast, he may be good at it but he detests reading which as an English graduate and lifelong bookworm makes me so sad!)

There's such a wide level of ability in Y1 though.

Roomba · 28/01/2018 16:42

My best friend at school could barely read a word until she was about 8 or 9, her parents were frantic and she had loads of interventions. Then she just seemed to get it - she went to a top uni and is a published author now who is doing very well for herself.

RockinRobinTweets · 28/01/2018 16:48

Summer boy - blue. Only recently got his head round it but the penny is definitely dropping. I’m really proud of his progress

Naty1 · 28/01/2018 18:53

I think that learning to read is a skill you do once. Remembering meanings of words, answering comprehension questions is very different. Same as arithmetic is not the same as much harder maths.

HandbagKrabby · 28/01/2018 19:01

We’ve just been reading an orange stage 6 book if that helps. I try to not compare with other dc though as that way madness lies.

Lifechallenges · 28/01/2018 20:05

Blue. Harder ones for guided reading. Bright child in good school in good area. They don’t push them too fast through. And yes it changes

AliTheMinx · 28/01/2018 22:23

My son is in Year One and is on Gold (Stage 9) and occasionally White (Stage 10).

Didiplanthis · 28/01/2018 22:41

Mine is on 7 . But i reckon actually reads better (expression and enthusiasm) than his yr 3 sister who was on 11 at this stage in yr1 but doesn't like reading, never reads for pleasure , and who's friends who were on 4 when she was on 11 now read better than her. So I'm not really bothered by levels !

TinyTear · 29/01/2018 10:24

6 last week and on level 9...

FlyingGoose · 29/01/2018 10:35

I have august born (premature) twins in year 1. One is on orange and the other still on yellow.
