Reading - time per day

Reading another thread about parents dedicating time to read with their children, v important of course but how much time is needed?

DD (5) gets 1 book a day and the book band she's on the books have 30-35 pages. Depending on what mood she's in it can be quick (5-10 minutes) but sometimes it can take a lot longer than that.

What do others do? Just plough on on the basis that the book has to be read, or read until they're becoming too distracted?

I'm such a stickler for rules I like to send the book back in read every day, but especially as books have fewer pictures now it can be a bit of a chore, especially for DD to read out loud.

Thanks. DD is such a pickle. I try to put the book away if she's distracted / playing around / singing rather than reading the text but once she's started a book she insists on finishing it. We need a new approach.

She's in Y1 btw, not reception in case anyone thinks I have a very advanced reader..

Even if child can read fluently, they need to get reading stamina to read longer stories.
When ds was younger, sometimes he read whole book to me, sometimes we took turns, or sometimes he read few pages to me and told me what the stories was about.

I still listen to him everyday, but sometimes he reads aloud a whole chapter while I'm cooking, or just few pages and he reads few chapters to himself and tell me about it afterwards.

Alternating reading or reading some bits in 'thinking voice' is a good idea. Thanks

I'm just Envy at the one appropriate book a day. We get one inappropriate book a week. Takes DD about 30 seconds.

Does she know that if she doesn't finish the book one day she can still finish it the next day? She might not realise if they've been short up to now. If it's taking longer than I've got, I'd let the child carry on reading to me while I cook the tea or something. If they're messing around but do actually want to finish the book with you that day then you have plenty of leverage. "Come on, are you going to read properly or am I going to go and get on with xyz?"

My DS is in Y1 and turquoise band, now the books have got slightly longer I’ve started to focus on quality over quantity - so I’d rather be read half one day with expression, punctuation etc than goes through the motions of a 32pg biff chip et al in a monotone boredom/distraction tone.

I don't expect the children in my class read a whole book every night. Some do but others read a couple of pages a day. As long as they read regularly I'm more than happy that they're getting support at home as I know parents have busy lives.

Thanks all. Some good ideas here. Yes we are lucky with the school's approach of sending lots of appropriate books home.

I think a focus on quality over quantity sounds good. Also reading to me while I'm cooking. Actually she doesn't get car sick and did once read a book to me while we were driving somewhere so that might work too.

At age five it's important that you look at the text while she's reading to ensure accuracy so I'd discourage parents from listening while doing other tasks.

Y1 dd only gets 2/wk. So we have always finished it in the time. But actually always read it in one go. So i agree with others you are very lucky to get one a day.
Otoh though it gives us lots of time to read other stuff, she has been reading Isodora Moon, Squishy Mcfluff and the Sophie stories.

We are ten mins a day. All the school near us have banners outside promoting 10mins a day.
