The last example is not a good example because it was done with the teacher

If you sign up to this, you can see lots of example of writing by various aged child. (It's free.) Also great resources for writing.

Yr3

Stompythedinosaur · 25/01/2018 00:19

I would say y2 or y3 but I think it's normal for there to be quite a wide range of ability at that age.

MollyHuaCha · 25/01/2018 00:39

What dull worksheets. Poor child. I bet he'd sooner be writing adventure stories or running around in the playground.

I feel sorry for children having to cram all this boring grammar. No wonder your DS switched off and had to have the teacher talk him through it.

catkind · 25/01/2018 00:59

By the content I'd think yr 4ish? Maybe 5 as DS in year 4 is only just learning about noun phrases etc. But maybe other schools start the formal grammar sooner. Handwriting is similar to DS on a good day. Looks to me like he's often not really understanding the tasks though. I'd be more worried about that than the handwriting.

He may be doing well in school if he is making good progress from his starting point. I'd guess relatively low ability for his year given the amount he's not understanding the exercises and the "done together with teacher" section.

And I don't entirely agree Molly, DS would love a worksheet like that and hate being asked to write adventure stories. Though admittedly the latter might be better for him!

junebirthdaygirl · 25/01/2018 01:29

I agree with Molly. What horrible boring worksheets. I was that age in the 60s and our worksheets were more exciting. He obviously had no idea what he was supposed to do in the forget one so maybe not clearly taught first. I wouldn't judge the handwriting as thats not the issue. My dh has incredibly bad handwriting and is highly trained in a medical field. My ds is coming to the end of a challenging degree course with equally poor handwriting ..inherited from his Dad!!
But he doesn't get the instructions in some cases and as said already its very poor work to give any child. I am a teacher in lreland.

ciaa · 25/01/2018 01:41

The handwriting isn't what I'd be concerned. I'd be worried that the child has answered almost every question incorrectly and either is not understanding any of the work or is rushing through and not reading questions properly.

Molly, I agree with cat, my ds would love worksheet like that. And also loves writing adventure stories. Better grammar would help writing good stories.
And yes, agree with others on not understanding what he was asked.
Depending on age, I wouldn't say he is doing well. KS1 I wouldn't worry, ks2, I would worry.

GU24Mum · 25/01/2018 08:06

From the worksheet level, I'd have said Y3 or possibly Y4. What's the answer OP?!

Maldives2006 · 25/01/2018 10:49

Hi thankyou to everyone I really appreciate the opinions my little adhd, dyslexic and query dyspraxic sweetheart is in year 5 but apparently is doing well in school and all interventions have been stopped 😃😃. I’m just trying to plan my next step but to be honest have got a big depressed with it all. He’s doing well in other aspects of the curriculum but obviously does need adaptations put in place or he’ll fail
English.
