Have a headache.

Could you help.

I’m getting the lowest common denominator as 240? Is this the easiest way of working this out and then multiplying the numerator. Seems a huge number to fathom. The first and the fourth are one whole and the fraction.

Would you also change all to mixed or all to improper?

1 2/3. 7/4. 17/10. 1 5/8.

7/4, 17/10, 1, 2/3, 5/8

MikeUniformMike · 21/01/2018 20:22

Sorry. I missed the 1 and 5/8 and interpreted it as 5/8.

BlazingBlaster · 21/01/2018 20:23

Sorry, there’s four fractions in total

1 2/3
7/4
17/10
1 5/8

Which method did you use to work this out MUM?

I think 120 is the LCD?

user789653241 · 21/01/2018 20:24

LCD is 120.

3, x 2^3 x 5 = 120. And compare, I think.

BlazingBlaster · 21/01/2018 20:25

I’m such a maths phonic and this gives me a real headache Blush

1 2/3 = 5/3 = 1.666667
7/4 = 1.75
17/10 = 1.7
13/8 = 1.625

BlazingBlaster · 21/01/2018 20:27

I’ve been looking at it for so long, of course it’s 120. Blush

Convert to decimal, they're all easy to do that to in your head aren't they?

1.6...
1.7
1.75
1.625

BlazingBlaster · 21/01/2018 20:28

And of course I meant phobic!

MUM, thanks, decimal is the other option I looked at to try and find the answer.

SirFred, I look at numbers on a page and they just start jumbling up. Awful I know.

It's easy to prime factorise each denominator to find LCD, but just multiplying everything to find common denominator works totally fine as well.
So 240 is still a good way to do it imo.

Ginandplatonic · 21/01/2018 20:31

120 is LCD. So

195/120 (1 5/8)
200/120 (1 2/3)
204/120 (17/10)
210/120 (7/4)

BlazingBlaster · 21/01/2018 20:33

Thanks Irvine, I last worked out things like this in the 80’s. Shows doesn’t it Blush

It’s not awful, y6 maths is hard when you’re out of practice.
I think they would expect you covert them to the lowest common denominator and order them as improper fractions and then change them back to the original.
So 1 2/3 = 200/120
7/4= 210/120
17/10= 204/120
13/8= 195/120.

BlazingBlaster · 21/01/2018 20:47

Thanks OhCrepe.

I try and work look through homework so I can confidentially help dc if needs be. They don’t know I do this Grin Mum is maths expert if they ask.

Don’t think I’ll be able to keep this up for much longer.

ha ha yes it’s at a different level than in our day (80s too for me). I’m a teacher so I’ve revisited the curriculum frequently but I still need to remind myself of the expected methods sometimes.
There are some great YouTube maths tutors you could check out when it gets even more tricky.
