What are ELSA sessions?

Just after some extra info/advice - I know what the ELSA acronym stands for but why might a child be referred for ELSA sessions? What exactly is emotional literacy? What type of things would they do in the sessions? And would a parent be told if their child was identified as needing this intervention?

It's usually working on social skills - making friends, building confidence, turn taking, dealing with frustration, appropriate reactions to feeling angry etc. At least, that's what my 7 year old was invited to do it to help.

Thanks for that link - that one didn't come up in my initial search.

Thanks, Rue - did the school inform you that your son could benefit from the sessions?

Mam.....you usually have to fill in a form to agree to these sessions.

Hmm, no agreement sought (not that I object but just like to know what's what!)

They help children to learn how to express themselves and manage their emotions. Children can benefit from them who may have a communication processing issue, or who may have issues with anxiety, impulsive behaviour or controlling emotions.
If it is offered as part of the interventions to support learning for children, schools don't have to seek agreement from parents.

I was told at a parents evening that they had already started it with him! The teacher mentioned it in passing, I'd have had no idea otheriwise, he doesn't talk about school much.
