Can anyone recommend any learning to read book collections? My ds has just started reading short words and I’d like to start one of those book collections that progress from starter books to slightly more advanced reading levels. Thanks!

Whatever you do, make sure it’s a phonics scheme, not ‘look and say’. Lots of people recommend Songbirds (Julia Donaldson) which you can get in a set very cheaply from The Book People. Floppy’s Phonics are ok too, I believe. Others will no doubt suggest more!

How old is your DS? Is he at school yet? Whether or not, it would be worth knowing what phonics scheme they will be following at the school he’s at or is likely to go to (commonly Jolly Phonics or Letter and Sounds I believe). It may be better to start with a set of books they won’t use at school, as he may get bored if he has to repeat them at school.

Make sure you know your phonics: how to pronounce the sounds. Alphablocks on Cbeebies may be useful for you both.

There’s no rush, but if he’s ready to learn to read, have fun!

Definitely songbirds over biff, chip etc.

These are nice too as you read them with your children. www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=435162&cm_mmc=Google%20Adwords--PLA--My+First+Reading+Library+Collection+-+50+Books-_--MFSC&gclid=Cj0KCQiA4bzSBRDOARIsAHJ1UO4aiS4nJ7xGWssFBoagBuPLkeDsnTcTF8LEn5NhekBCT4bf_pak_DEaAvMHEALw_wcB

For my son I also got the read write inc card sets and played word bingo, adding phonemes together to make words.

I bought the Julia Donaldson Songbirds set (levels 1 to 6) for my son when he was in Reception. When he finished those, I got the Project X Alien Adventures - from memory, The Book People sell series 1 and 2 for £30. Those go up to level 14 so your son should be able to tackle most books once he’s finished those.

Thank you lots of good ideas here! My ds is 4 and a half and started reception this year. He brought home a songbird book over Xmas which I thought was well suited to the level he is at so will have a look at that.

Thank you tomorrow the first library collection is perfect will def get this one

We're enjoying our Reading Chest subscription. Both DC get books in the post on their reading level, three at a time, and when we're done we send them back and receive new ones.

DH did point out for the same money we could buy quite a few books, but the DC enjoying getting a surprise in the post...
