ds2'S School are proposing a school trip to a Cheshire with an overnight stay. I missed the letter they sent home (later found in DS1's room - he had picked DS2 up from school) and so didn't get to go to the meeting about it, but at the meeting they said it would be £35 + cost of coach. People were invited to go to the meeting to be reassured about the overnight stay I think.

We had the letter sent home with the full details and the cost is £60

Is it just me or does this seem a bit steep?

Yes that is steep, where are they staying? I would be annoyed when they said it would be £35 + cost of coach, they have almost doubled the cost.

PrincessPeaHead · 23/04/2007 14:36

our yr 4s are going on a 2 night 2.5 day outdoor adventure type weekend for £130 so I suppose £60 is probably about right.... it is steep but they have to have a fair number of staff, insurance up tot eh eyeballs etc etc

and coach hire is expensive

Rebi · 23/04/2007 14:36

For overnight probably not, I'm afraid! My ds is in P7 (11 years old) and they are off to Holland for 5 days in June - £395 plus £55 pocketmoney - scandalous!!!

Gobbledigook · 23/04/2007 14:36

Ooh, where are they going? I'm nosey!

TheodoresMummy · 23/04/2007 14:36

Depends on what it includes, but BIG jump from £35 to £60.

portonovo · 23/04/2007 14:38

Ours pay about £60 for a 2-night stay (go Mon a.m., back Wed afternoon), in Yr 4.

NuttyMuffins · 23/04/2007 14:39

We have been quoted £70 for an overnight trip to London, inc a trip to an exhibition.

beckybrastraps · 23/04/2007 14:42

Coaches are eye-wateringly expensive. It is a constant problem for school trips. I organised a residential field trip and it was cheaper for us all to take the train than to hire a coach .

mumto3girls · 23/04/2007 14:45

my dd in yr 10 wants to go to kenya this yr with the school..£1400...

NormaStanleyfletcher · 23/04/2007 14:46

I can't remember exactly where they are going

Insurance prob very high, esp for this age..?

MrsWho · 23/04/2007 20:38

It'll be the coach cost , they are very expensive .

admylin · 25/04/2007 09:39

PrincessPeaHead, that sounds expensive for 2 nights. My dd has a trip in July for 4 nights, 5 days with all food and transport for 135 Euro - she's not going on it but it seems quite cheap compared.

MummyPenguin · 25/04/2007 13:48

Personally, I wouldn't let my DS (who's in year 2) go on an over night stay with school. They're too young, and still need their Mummies a lot at that age.

Lucycat · 25/04/2007 13:49

It will be Beeston Castle, I bet, we don't have that many in Cheshire!

or is a PGL type place?

gscrym · 25/04/2007 13:57

Whatever happened to school trips to a local beach, the zoo or some museum nearby.

The school I worked at had things like fortnight outward bound, skiing for a week and an arts cruise round the greek islands.

Lilymaid · 25/04/2007 14:02

It may be an overnight at Burwardsley and a day trip from there (walking possibly) to Beeston Castle. DS used to do trips like that with his Cheshire primary school from Y2 onwards. Cheshire CC owned several old school buildings that were used as field study centres with accommodation.
Just wait until he gets to secondary school - geography trips to Iceland, ski trips to Canada (and that is in a state school).

NormaStanleyfletcher · 26/04/2007 12:31

Yes it is beeston castle

I think the other thing that has pushed the price up is they are taking one class (of 20 ish?) and 7 teachers. I would want a staff ratio like that if I was taking 7 yr olds away, and obviously we have to pay for the teachers accom and transport too.

Coaches are expensive - it might be cheaper to take the train, but we had to stop doing that for our Year 6 week at Lakeside in Cumbria because they couldn't guarantee the trains would be running at all until three weeks before the trip. But it does mean that there's now a limit on how many can go.
