Unimpressed with son's maths education (out of a book) so wishing to inspire him with some great games. Any suggestions? I'm thinking in particular about CD-ROMs and board games. Amazon is a nightmare when you want something specific!

Thank you for the replies. I'll go through them tonight. DS is 6 years old, so just starting to handle numbers. This should be practical and fun!

I recommend abacus for practical maths. Can be very handy for all 4 operation and also place value understanding. At 6, you can incorporate maths in everyday life. House numbers = odd/even numbers, sharing sweets = division, ask him to tell time, let him pay for his treat at shops, cutting pies/pizza/cake = fraction, etc.

FlyTipper · 21/12/2017 07:07

An actual abacus you mean? Or some range of products? I don't think I've ever used an abacus for anything other than counting. Interesting idea.

Don't know what's happening...

The card game golf is a great one for encouraging quick mental addition. Rules are easy enough to find if you Google.

Sorry op, my pc is playing up a bit!?

FlyTipper · 23/12/2017 16:17

Thanks for the link. Very interesting and I think I'll be investing in an abacus.

the apps by squeebles and dragon box are good:

maths whizz is fabulous for primary kids
www.whizz.com/

Johnny ball has written a few good books for primary kids - may be a bit advanced for a six year old
example

Some concete resources for shapes
place value
fractions
cuisenaire rods

the magic cauldron and sum swamp games are good but maybe a bit easy - mainly involve single digit addition/subtraction.
