Speed sounds KS1

Hello
I was wondering how many speed sounds or which sets your dc have been expected to know by the beginning and end of year 1.
My dc has recently changed schools and I think the expectations at the new school are higher than his previous school.
I think he was starting set 3 in year 1 at the last school, but now he is expected to have left reception knowing 56 speed sounds. At a progress meeting the teacher said he didn't have enough speed sounds or sight words, I have asked for a list of what he needs to know, but so far no list. I have been trying to find out myself which sounds he needs to cover. Thanks.

There are only 44 sounds in English (give or take 1 or 2 depending on accent)

Thank you. I cannot find any more than the RWI 3 sets which I believe gives 55. According to this teacher they should have 92 by the end of the year.
I think I need to ask her again.

If you can find a list of the sounds in each set you can check which ones he knows by asking him to read either a real or a pseudo word with that sound. For example, hail and naid for ai.
The only other experience I have of RWI is from when my DS1 was doing it at school 12 years ago so I'm not sure about the sets for y1.

There aren’t 55 to give. There are only 44 sounds but around 180 ways they are spelled in English.

The 'Speed sounds' exercise is practising responding to a grapheme with the sound/s it spells.

As I recall, each 'set' contains the graphemes that are taught in a unit.

Potentially there could be up to 160 - 180 of them (though I don't think that there are that many.)

You're being pedantic, mrz Wink

Not intentionally.

Reading through the information it doesn’t appear as if there are speed sound cards for all the alternatives (just two per sound?)

Hi,

You are correct in that RWI only goes up to set 3. I am wondering if the teacher meant being able to read all the alternative spellings for sounds? See attached RWI complex speed sound chart for these. Many of these sounds are not specifically taught but are just referred to whilst teaching set1-3 sounds.

I'm a RWI phonics leader and most of Year 1 at the moment are in the middle of learning Set 2 sounds. We are an Inner London School with mostly EAL children and many SEN so might not be the best school to compare with but the expectations at your school do seem high (which is not a bad thing!)

By the end of Y1 my class will have been taught around 100 common ways the sounds can be represented

TheFishInThePot · 21/11/2017 07:24

Thanks thats really helpful. I have ordered the WRI flash cards to catch him up a bit. The complex sounds will be helpful.

A lot of them are on here: www.templelearningacademy.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RWI_correlation_document.doc

My son is year one and with year twos for rwi and knows them all but it really varies from cohort to cohort. Only top group in year two knows them all and are on blue books.
There two sets of rwi cards and they are very good.
