Amount of foundation subject time in year 6

I was just wondering how much time in year 6 your children (or students depending on whether you are a parent or teacher) have for subjects like Art and Music?
I’ve found out that after Christmas until SATs my dc will only be having an hour a day. Extra Maths and English skills will be added to the afternoon.
I understand that after SATs it eases off a bit but this just feels extreme. Four hours a day.
I feel disappointed it has come to this.

How normal is this?

An hour and a half every afternoon and one full morning, was what I think my niece had last year. Additional revision sessions where added, but not until Easter or near Easter. She had a few trips and visits from drama/theatre groups as well, but I’m not sure if they came on the day she didn’t normally have maths and English.

We do 1 hour maths, 1 and a half hours English a day ( basically all morning).

After lunch, we have 2 hours - that's for everything else.

However, we run 20 min maths booster sessions during the lunch hour (not more than 2 a week per child) and English boosters in the afternoon ( not more than 2 a week per child).

So the very least a child could be doing would be 8 hours of Science/PE/RE/History/Geography/Art/DT/Computing/PHSE/Music/Dance.

We also run daily boosters during Assembly.

We are a 2 form entry with an extra teacher available in the afternoons. Other schools may have to do a 'one size fits all' timetable if there's no extra help.

DD’s (state) school:
Both sets do English and Maths in the morning on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

First set spend the 3rd lesson (of 4) of the day doing “projects” (there seems to be a lot of free reign here - this half term DD is doing hers on “Harry Potter” Hmm ).

Second set do more English and maths 3rd lesson (depending on the day - if a child is only in lower set for English, they’ll work on their “project” two days of the four and vice versa).

Fourth lesson the sets mix and they all do art/music/PE/topic (history/geography/ICT/RE etc).

On a Wednesday the sets mix and they all have French, PE, and double science.

I suppose if the school only had one form entry they might have to do it like yours - luckily DD’s in a year of 60 which allows them to split, as it’s a very mixed intake (a number can’t even be entered for year 6 SATs, DD got level 5s and 6s in their mocks).

Specifically art and music - there’s 1 art lesson on a Monday and 1 music lesson on a Wednesday. PE is two lessons a week, and “topic” is one - though I feel that crosses over with “projects”. From what I remember with older DCs after SATs they did a few lessons of German and lots of drama/singing/dance as they prepared for an end of school show, as well as some art to make costumes and sets and programmes for the show.

(I have no idea what day the music lesson is on so don’t know why I wrote Wednesday!)

1hr per day max at my school. This will also be binned for spellings/ mental maths/ past paper practice nearer the time.
