Summer uniform - are open-toed sandals allowed?

Will check with school on Monday, but have an idea that open-toed sandals were a no-no in primary school?
Anyone know? And what shoes to wear instead? Winter shoes look so heavy and hot in this weather.

My daughters school don't allow opened toed sandals though she did get away with wearing them last year. I couldn't find any closed toed ones.

MrsBadger · 13/04/2007 13:27

depends on the school
besides, socks get filthy in open toes, and when you compare trad closed toe school sandals thus to trad winter shoes thus there\s not really a lot in it.

Wotzsaname · 13/04/2007 13:28

Not in our school, had a letter recently. to do with health and safety. Daft!

MrsBadger · 13/04/2007 13:29

though to be fair it's a sight easier to pedal a tricycle or climb on a climbing frame in closed toes than opens...

Wotzsaname · 13/04/2007 14:06

MrsBadger, do you have climbing fame in school? My school had an activity thing put in playground, soft floor etc. It can only be used in PE now, as in the playground one time, a child fell and chipped their tooth (so dd tells me).

What a waste.

DumbledoresGirl · 13/04/2007 14:10

I didn't realise this was a no-no at my children's school (it certainly wasn't at their last school) and bought my dd some open toed sandals. I was told about the school rule, but the sandals were bought and worn by that time so there was no way I was going to take them back.

It does seem to be quite common in schools these days (as my complaint here on Mumsnet was met by loads of people telling me it was the norm in their children's schools). A clue for your school might be if you can see many open toed school sandals in your local shops. I could only find one style when I bought dd's last year; of course, the shops weren't selling them because the schools did not allow them. If you go to a local shop, they may even know themselves if your school allows them.

MamaG · 13/04/2007 14:13

The amount of times I fell in open toed shoes as a kid - I constantly caught the front and my foot would flip out of the sandal, but still be attached at the ankle....I still bear the scars, hence DD is NOT allowed open toes!

portonovo · 13/04/2007 14:51

Open-toed sandals are less safe.

For a 'lighter' effect, why not try traditional t-bar type, so you have the closed-toed bit, but still some open area and airiness.

Furball · 13/04/2007 15:04

ds had them last year so I have just got him some for this year. School said is was OK.

islandofsodor · 13/04/2007 15:09

Really does depend on the school. When dd was in nursery last year we were told open toed sandals were allowed but they must have closed backs to give enough foot support.

Am sure I saw some pre-prep girls last year in clarks type shoes which were semi open.

OrvilleRedenbacher · 13/04/2007 15:12

depends on shcool

our head doenst care in very hot weather

Clary · 13/04/2007 23:43

Agree with others re safety (ie not) of open-toed sandals, esp on a climbing frame.

This for me reinforces the uniform argument - like why it's not a good idea to come to school in a princess dress.

Aaah MrsB I love the Start-Rite shoes

DS1 had gorge pair last year of summer school shoes but suspect now he is in juniors he will have to stick to hideous clumpy chunky winter ones

christywhisty · 15/04/2007 12:50

My daughter was allowed open toe until last year. Clarks do a closed toe sandal which we got last year, and I have seen them in our local shop this year but they are not on the website.

fortyplus · 15/04/2007 12:51

My sons' primary school banned sandals on health & safety grounds. Personally I think it should be left to parents to decide.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 15/04/2007 12:57

Our school allows them, it an be hard to find boys shoes (given they don't have the T bar option per norm) that are closed toes. However, this year i have stopped caring after the teachers sat by and ignored DS1 picking the entire leather coating, then soles off his expensive leather Clarks shoes. He will get cheapo ones fot the first few weeks, then Crocs, as they are in fact almost impossible to damage (as far as I can see). I am beyond caring! At last however theya re closed toes

elasticbandstand · 15/04/2007 13:07

i always used to buy them, clerks, til they changed school, how mortifying to find they were the only ones wearingthem...

nappyaddict · 15/04/2007 13:35

how about something like these or these

nappyaddict · 15/04/2007 13:36

there's the white and pink leather ones on next too.

christywhisty · 15/04/2007 14:21

Our school the shoes have to be navy or black. There are a pair in Next but the heel looks too high.

NuttyMuffins · 15/04/2007 14:48

Not allowed at our school.

nappyaddict · 16/04/2007 20:42

in barratts they have got black slip on type things but with some elastic across to stop them coming off.

they've got these too and i saw them in black in the shop even though they are white on the website. shoes
