Places to do with the Romans

My children are learning about the Romans in school at the moment, and are very keen to visit Hadrian's walk. As we live in the SW this maybtake a bit of planning/saving so I was wondering if there are other good places to go that bring the Romans to life a bit? Or any good museums with exhibits about the Romans?

I remember being taken to some Roman baths when I was a child but have no idea where they were!

If you are ever in SE London / NW Kent then do consider Lullingstone. It isn’t worth a journey on its own but it is very interesting and they have clothes the kids can try on, videos and games as well as the villa foundations itself. It is one of the English Heritage properties if you have membership.

St Albans is great, but so is Chester, York and anywhere on Hadrians wall. Wroxeter was fabulous. There are the remains of a Roman road on the North Yorkshire moors, just outside of Goathland.

Colchester.

The East Riding museum in Hull also has a very good Roman section with various mosaics and a recreation of a villa/town. I just remembered that! It was very good, my kids enjoyed it.

I can't believe what an idiot I am: I've booked a bloody trip to Rome!!!

Will be awesome, complete with Gladiator school before our visit to the Coliseum and mosaic making lesson, but I didn't bloody think we could do Romans 10 minutes down the road from home.

Rome itself is on a different scale to what we have in Britain TBF.

In the SW definitely Bath, Cirencester museum and Chedworth.

Caerleon actually has a great Roman baths and museum
Fishbourne near Chichester is also good.
The one on the Isle of Wight also great.

Came on to say Cirencester museum as well - it's a good size (i.e. not so big that museum fatigue sets in). While in Ciren, can look at the remains of the Roman amphitheatre. And as pp said, can combine with Chedworth Roman Villa up the road.

The baths at Bath are amazing.

Cirencester was one of the major towns in Roman times.
There is a good museum
There are some remains of walls (not that impressive)
There is Chedworth villa nearby

and there is the Bullring, a place almost unheard of except by local residents. It is a green field, but it is shaped like an amphitheatre, because it WAS an ampitheatre in Roman times. Local kids use it for sledging when we have snow, you go down to the bottom and half way up the other side. It is a veyr simple but cool place.
On outskirts of cirencester, not very easy to find as no sign posts

steppemum · 17/10/2017 23:33

Oh and cirencester museum is very hands on

Ttbb · 17/10/2017 23:35

St Albans is the first thing that comes to mind.

Wolfiefan · 17/10/2017 23:40

YY to Cirencester.

I’m not sure we’re abouts you are but Tullie house in carlisle has some wonderful roman exhibits. I am the worst camera man in the world but they were from its roman cavalierly exhibition which was amazing.

I’m not sure what’s on at the moment but maybe worth a look.

Small project for the kids. Get a map of the UK. Any place with Chester or Cester in it was ones a Roman settlement/fort. Get the kids to ring each one they can find.

There are other places the Romans built in obviously like London and York but it can be quite illuminating to see just how far they spread.
