Our son (7) has always struggled to read. He loves the stories and has a good understanding of plot & character but struggles to actually read the words. He has very poor memory for words (pretty good for Pokemon though). He still sounds out most words and although he remembers most of the phonemes , he ultimately lacks fluency. He finds it difficult to settle down and is easily distracted. Writing is not the best either but maths/science is pretty good.
He reads to us every morning and we read to him every night. He moved to orange level last January. We have read 40 or so books at that level. He moves to juniors and was re assessed. Still orange.
We even throughout the holidays to avoid summer learning loss ( well, not on holiday we're not complete monsters !)
Previously we just plodded on with the reading thinking it would all just click. But I understand that if you are behind in reading in Y4, you will most likely always be behind.
So I will go to see the teacher because this strategy is clearly not working. We've had no progress in 9 months.
I just wondered if anyone had any guidance on what kind of program/intervention we should be pushing for? ( he already has glasses and passed hearing test before anyone asks).
