What sort of thing do you want to know? Is your child in Reception or Year 1?

Take your child to the park after school or at the weekends so he or she can run about and get some exercise. Read with and to your child every day. Make sure you get maths into everyday life - baking, board games, working out how many carrots you need to cook for the family etc. That's pretty much it for a five year old, apart from just making sure you answer all his/her questions or at least help him/her look up the answers if you don't know.

What does he actually want to do, or like doing already?

5 is on the young side for learning an instrument so, unless he's absolutely begging to start, then leave that for now. Though if there's a sort of young music makers class near you (where he could try a number of instruments and sing a lot) that might be worthwhile (though they tend to be aimed at pre-schoolers)

How do you get to school? do you drive or walk? Walking to and from school is a good way to get your child more active. if you drive then park away from the school (be easier too) and walk the rest. same if you take the bus, get off a few stops early and walk. If you pass a park on the way home stop off for a run around, or a play on the swings.

You do not have to pay for special activities for your child to encourage them to exercise, but remember that the nights will be drawing in soon, so schedule some family walks at the weekend to make sure your child is getting out and about in the daylight.

Join your local library, encourage your child to enjoy books by reading to them every night, read good quality picture books, talk to your child about the stories and pictures.

If English is not your first language then speak to your child in your first language, your child will learn English at school, but what you can offer is a good language role model in your first language, the learning your child gets from you in your first language will transfer to English, and having strong first language skills will actually support their English development.

Use one of these? it stays warm, don't need heating at school.
