Label school shoes?

Probably over reacting to most but my little girl started school in reception on Wednesday. Today she came home and took her shoes off, her teachers have written in sharpie or permanent marker , her full name across the soles. It looks horrible considering her shoes had the prettiest sparkly soles, they just don't look nice now never mind I can't sell them on or pass them down to anyone else.
I dint know why but it's made me absolutely fume. I dint know why they didn't ask me to label them if needed or at least write it in the white sewn in bits inside the shoe that could be taken out later on. Yes, ok she won't lose them and no one can take the name out now but still...

If the teacher didn't label them they may not have made it home.
I write my dc's names in black marker pen in their shoes.

Imagine a class changing for PE and the resulting jumble of black shoes left scattered under desks. Names speed up the process.

Singap0reSling · 07/09/2017 23:41

Even if no PE or changing, our reception kids would take their shoes off to sit down comfortably for "carpet time", being read to in the comfy corner.

Be grateful that her shoes weren't lost or that she didn't come home with someone else's shoes. Teacher didn't do it to annoy or spite you, they did it so there'd be no mistake and your DD would keep her shoes.

You wouldn't be saying that if those pretty little shoes somehow accidentally got swapped with some battered old shoes would you? You wouldn't believe the things that go missing if you don't label them... I used to think the teachers hid the unlabelled items on purpose!

Of course you label school shoes.....

ineedaholidaynow · 08/09/2017 08:15

I assume there is another girl with exactly the same type of shoe and the teacher named them to ensure they didn't get muddled.

DS always wore his school shoes out before he outgrew them at Primary School. The soles didn't seem to have any wear in them. We certainly couldn't pass/sell them on to anyone else

My year 7 named her shoes before term started. I think I would have been a bit cross but maybe just embarrassed that the teacher did it for me Wink

BarbarianMum · 08/09/2017 08:56

They did tell you though didn't they? When they asked you to label everything. Then took action when you took no notice. If you want her shoes nicely labelled you need to get in first. So now you know and in future it'll be fine.

Hang on - sparkles on he soles - the bottom - of the shoes? Whose going to see that? I'm intrigued.

Sharpies are the best solution. Stickers fall off and it must be a nightmare in class when they teacher asks the children to all go and change their shoes.

I've never heard of shoes being labelled and I definitely think the teacher should of mentioned or asked you first. It is you property after all.

isittheholidaysyet · 09/09/2017 18:53

You should label EVERYTHING that goes into school, right down to each individual pencil, eraser, sock (and our reception teachers says underpants too) toy, hat, non-uniform on 'own clothes day', everything.

Teacher should not have labelled the shoes for you. That was unacceptable.

(I sometimes haven't labelled things, but that is fully on the understanding that they will go missing.)

BlackStripedCat · 09/09/2017 18:57

You should label absolutely everything

I'd be fuming too. I label my kids school shoes now but using stick on labels on the inside of the shoe. My DD came out of school one day in one shoe (brand new Clarks) and we never found its companion. I have my suspicions. Since then everything is labelled.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 10/09/2017 21:19

Reception children are forever taking their shoes off. Especially when dressing up or sitting in the book corner.
Many children will have the same size and style.
After spending time sorting them all out it's no wonder they got a name written in them.

eternalopt · 10/09/2017 21:25

You say she was only in for a couple of hours and there was no changing, but she must have taken her shoes off at some point for them to notice there were no levels inside, and therein lies the problem - they take their shoes off loads!

tara83 · 10/09/2017 21:50

My friends daughter had stickers put in her shoes. Maybe black soles so couldn't write in the them. My little girl says they all took their shoes off to have them named, but she's 4 so maybe there was other reasons that she's forgotten or couldn't be bothered to explain.
4 other children of mine have gone through school with Unnamed shoes and always came home with them.
I'm sure it's not done in spite as another reply said and nor are they party shoes , they're just plain Clarke's shoes that my daughter chose that happened to have sparkly soles, same as the others in the very small selection in her size at my local store. It was Clarke's idea to glam up the insoles this year lol.
As for them going in the bin before being outgrown, I usually replace shoes for the term after Xmas , my children grow out of them very quickly so they're usually good to go for another smaller child.
I'm sure I'll live with the writing in her shoes but have asked them to let me know if anything else needs doing before getting the sharpie out

If they're sparkly shoes they'll be popular so she won't be the only girl with that style of shoe. Label everything if you want to keep it!

Out2pasture · 11/09/2017 06:14

I use to lift the insoles and write the name on the back or bottom.
if you really need to sell them on you could replace the insoles with a cheap set of dr.schols cut to measure.

2014newme · 11/09/2017 11:33

30 pairs of unlabelled black shoes, many pairs the same. Teacher has had to sort out unlabelled stuff. Label them yourself lazy!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 11/09/2017 12:02

I label all but pants and socks. I have a stamp. Last year I used stikins

tara83 · 13/09/2017 12:14

I would have done if I knew labelling shoes was a " thing".

this reminds me of the parent who came in to complain about a missing sweatshirt, no it didn't have a name label in, but mum assured me she would know it by "the feel" , good luck with that one in a three form entry school I thought as I directed her to the lost property black bin, already overflowing three weeks in.............
