Reading level drop

My DD finished reception on level 4 but is on level 1 since she started year 1. Is this a normal thing or do I did to see the teacher? We read over the holidays.

it is a mix of Ginn 360 and Oxford reading tree. DD tends to whole word recognise because this is what they were taught in first half of reception.

That's not good. I'm guessing not newer ORT which are phonics-based either from other things you've said.

Even with good phonics teaching in school, non-decodable (at child's level) books is going to make it really hard to progress well. TBH in your position I'd seriously consider getting some phonics based reading books (Songbirds? Subscribe to Reading Chest? Check out local library?) to read at home and ignoring the school levels as much as possible.

It is Biff and Chip. We read level four songbirds at home.

Didn't have time to speak with her today but DH sent in a note asking thd question and we got back that she heard DD read and has moved her up a level. DD says the teacher only asked her if the book was too easy and then switched the book just before home time.

I am picking her up tomorrow so will have a quick word so that I understand.

There are some B&C ("Floppy phonics" series and maybe some other newer ones?) that are good with phonics. The older B&C are much more whole word oriented.

It's possible she heard your DD read things during normal classwork rather than "hearing her read" as in sitting on her own reading her reading book.

So after follow up school has stated there is a mix up across all Y1 class's and are putting it right.

How odd. Hopefully the result is some sensible level books for your DD!
