Where do you get PE kit and school clothes from? Reception

My DD is starting reception next week and I need to get some shorts and white tshirts for her PE class but apart from the usual (Tesco, Sainsbury's and ASDA which don't seem to have much choice, where else could I look?
I just read that the school uniform is not compulsory and the school's colours are yellow and navy - I don't want to buy a uniform because DD will only attend this school for a few weeks (we're moving quite soon after we exchange on a new house) - if I send my DD to school on the first day in navy trousers/leggings and a yellow top would that be ok? I realise how ridiculous my questions sound but I genuinely don't know! Many thanks for all the help!

If the school has a uniform part of the home-school agreement in taking the place is adhereing to uniform policy.

I would buy uniform and sell-on once you finish. Branded uniform usually resells easily.

PE kit, you really don't need much choice in this surely? Supermarkets are best though. Or the Adidas, Nike etc shops if you so wish.

thanks! They don't say it's compulsory, they just mention that parents indicated that they wanted clear guidelines on what the kids can wear.
I might ask a mum of a child that goes there!

I buy everything for school from John Lewis online. Their uniforms wash well and last longer than other brands. DS 7 who is rough and mucky gets a whole year out of his JL school trousers.

John Lewis.

Charmatt · 29/08/2017 17:56

I find John Lewis good quality and I buy their blouses from thereally. However, my daughter is too slim for the waists on their shorts, skirts and pinafore dresses. If the height is right tge waists are too big! Sainsbury's give a better fit on the height/waist ratio and the quality of their school wear is good. I bought t-shirts and navy cycling shorts for PE from there (as well as a really good pinafore dress) for her this year and am really pleased with them.

I'd get a couple of navy gingham frocks in a size a bit big.

Balfe · 29/08/2017 18:44

Don't send her in her own clothes- the rest of the children will all wear their uniform. She'll stand out.

Get a plain navy pinafore, shirt and cardigan. Buy Asda or Tesco online - they should still have plenty of stock. You should be able to buy a school tie from the school office.

I would try and speak to someone with a child already there. It sounds pointless buying uniform when it is not compulsory and she is not staying for very long. You might be able to get some bits second hand if needed. Can you remember what the children were wearing when you went to visit?

Avebury · 29/08/2017 19:12

If it really is just for a few weeks can I ask why you are sending her? Will it not be really difficult to move again just as she has settled in and got used to the rules and routines of the first school?

mummmy2017 · 29/08/2017 19:14

ASDA order in on line into the shop collect try on and get a refund on what you don't need, I always order the bigger size just incase
And you can still get most sizes this way

At my ds's school, we had children who wore totally different uniform at the beginning of reception. (twins)
I don't know the reason, but they moved away soon, so it must have been the reason. I don't think children cared. (Obviously I thought it was a bit odd, but not big deal, I assumed they must have had some reasons.)

SOUTHerner84 · 29/08/2017 21:24

It's difficult. You don't want to go and spend loads of money on stuff that won't fit her for long, but you don't want her being the only one not wearing school colours! I suppose in an ideal world you would have popped in at some point over the last year to get an idea, but you don't think of these things until its too late!
Things like PE kit - maybe depends on what happens if they don't have anything to change into

"They don't say it's compulsory, they just mention that parents indicated that they wanted clear guidelines on what the kids can wear."

That sounds like standard wording. I've seen a similar paragraph in my sons school handbook and in handbooks of other schools we looked at for him.
I think the other kids will all be wearing the "suggested" uniform.
I've seen yellow coloured polo shirts in TESCO. None of the supermarkets seem to do navy trousers or skirts in the shops. Possibly online?
I got mine in M&S but it seems a shame to pay out £££s for just one term..
Defo try to put her in some kind of uniform though, you don't want her to feel self concious.

Our school has navy uniform and it is occasionally in Sainsbury's, Aldi and marks and Spencer's but I usually buy it online in the sales. Next do it online as well.
