Are light up shoes ok?!

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place, it's regarding school uniform rather than actual education but wasn't sure where it fitted!

Just looking in a quick bit of feedback regarding school shoes. I just got talked into light up clarks in the shop - my daughter is starting year R. I'm now panicking that the lights will not be ok for school, or be considered as unacceptable. They are black leather with little lights in the sole, very discreet but still.

Does anyone with kids already in primary school have any opinions they'd like to share, before I make a faux pas on my first day?! Thanks!

You can switch the lights off if it's a problem.

MuseumGardens · 10/08/2017 17:26

Yes there is a button to switch them off

Avocado0nToast · 10/08/2017 17:39

Yes that's true...although it's on the side and she's already figured it out Hmm! Do many children have the ones with lights do you know? I guess I just don't want to get her the wrong thing...panicked a bit as Clarks of course had nothing left in her size!!

My DC always had the light up shoes at that age. I think that they help to keep children safe during the dark winter months. We were often out and about when it was dark before or after school.

leccybill · 10/08/2017 17:43

Lots of children had these when DD was in YR and Y1. They're very popular, don't worry.

Wait4nothing · 10/08/2017 17:46

As a teacher I've never had a problem with them 😃

OytheBumbler · 10/08/2017 17:55

They're fine.

My DD has had them through infants and her school is very strict otherwise on uniform.

SnowiestMountain · 10/08/2017 18:00

Very popular in our school too, DD is starting reception in September, she will probably end up with some 🙄

Copperspot · 10/08/2017 18:06

Very popular in my primary. They all strut round thinking they're the absolute bees knees for the first few days then the novelty seems to wear off Grin

I do hate those ones that had a lift up bit inside with a toy in. They caused no end if hassle! Kids randomly taking their shoes off in lessons / assembly to compare.

Avocado0nToast · 10/08/2017 19:02

Oh thanks so much all, that is really reassuring especially regarding strict uniforms etc. Wait4nothing thanks so much, I was dreading a teacher coming on and saying they hated them as they distracted the kids!

Ds' current shoes are light up when walking (didn't realise that until after he wore them for a while those as they were an emergency purchase)

Thegiantofillinois · 10/08/2017 20:58

Dd is going into yr 2. She has no truck with shoes-lights or not- and has decided she wants boots; ankle ones cos knee ones are too hot.

GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 10/08/2017 21:23

It really depends on the school, DDs is very strict, they are totally banned even if you can switch them off, but then they are on the ridiculous side of strict on most things. DS' school they aren't meant to wear them but none of the staff actually care enough to say much other than maybe ask children to turn them off in school mass, the school I work in they couldn't care less (and I think they're quite cool)

Zodlebud · 11/08/2017 07:27

They are banned at our school (along with bows and other attachments). It does say so very clearly on our uniform list though so I would refer to your school list and if it doesn't say anything then I would say you're safe!!!!

Only rule at my daughters school is that they are black . She has had light up ones before no problem .

Paddington68 · 12/08/2017 07:32

Light up shoes would not be allowed in any of the schools I work with.

thatdearoctopus · 12/08/2017 07:42

Well, to be honest, they do - or at the very least, they could do. I really wish the shoe manufacturers would consult teachers before they produce these gimmicks. The shoes with small toys hidden in the heels? For the love of God, who thought THAT was a good idea?!

2014newme · 12/08/2017 11:21

They can be switched off. Your dd won't notice you've surreptitiously switched them off shell be too excited for school

Mehfruittea · 20/08/2017 19:18

DS worked out how to switch on off straight away and demonstrated in the shop. They're fine for his school so long as he doesn't dick about with them.

Afternoon All ,
Not wishing to be a party-pooper , but have the
effect of exposure to these flickering lights on
toddler eyes ( or for that matter tired or head-achey parents or grandparents eyes )been properly clinically trialled ? If so, how ? To date
there has been lamentably little research into
photophobia ( acute sensitivity to light ) in
anyone . Should we be concerned about potential triggers for , say , migraine or
epilepsy in later in life that might have been
exacerbated by unsupervised staring at the
shoe lights ( or any other bright lights ) ?

elfonshelf · 17/12/2017 17:34

Totally depends on how strict your child's school is.

I have a DD in Y4 and her school are very laid back on uniform - as long as you have made a reasonable attempt to be in school colours (red & navy) and clothes are sensible then they turn a blind eye to all but the most ridiculous flouting of rules.

I've generally gone with if it's in the John Lewis 'school shoes' section or by Clarks, Startrite etc then it's totally fine. DD is as girly girl as they come so we generally end up with patent things with diamante or lights or hearts. As long as they're sensible and likely to last then I'm okay with it.

Brother's kids are at a school where they specify the exact brand and design of shoes. Given the number of times that we have had the choice of exactly one pair of shoes that fit due to DD's high arches and wide feet, I have more of a problem with this - it's really far more important that children have shoes that fit and properly support the foot than that they all look the same.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 18/12/2017 16:23

I’ve bought them for ds in past... a lot of time I realise after and never been an issue.
