Reading: Groups of letters which make the same sound - help needed to find definitive list

My ds is a good reader (in reception) but has progressed so quickly that I am worried he has not picked up on all the combinations of letters which make the same sound.

eg: a, ay, ai, eigh, a-e

Does anyone know of a website which lists these ?

Many thanks

what scheme are they doing

I bought the Jolly Phonics wall charts when my DS was in reception .. there's a jollyphonics site but you can also get them on amazon

Twiglett · 26/03/2007 13:56

but in phonics

a is a short a as in 'rabbit'

the ai thing would be picked up with

'2 vowels together go a-walking
only the first one does the talking
and it says its name'

the eigh as in eight/weight (can't think of another example) would be a tricky word learned on sight because you also have the same combination in sleight don't you

don't understand what you're getting at with the a-e bit though

hth and doesn't confuse too much

They are doing JP - just looked on the JollyLearning site - no joy for the combination of letters

Thanks twig

late, mate - ie I was taught that the magic e at the end of the word changed the a into ay

Never heard of the walking talking vowels - what about great - again the ay sound - second vowel now hogging the conversation

am I not understanding what the problem is because the wall frieze / posters do have the letter combinations on them

some of them don't have rules though

Peridot30 · 26/03/2007 14:05

MY ds's school doesn't teach them Phonics. THey use THRASS to teach them the letters. THRASS teaches them the sounds of the letters eg a sounds different in the words apple and baby. IM sure you can find info about THRASS on the net.

Twiglett · 26/03/2007 14:05

there are exceptions to all the rules which just have to be learned as 'tricky words'

the magic e still exists for late / mate etc

indignatio · 26/03/2007 14:09

Checked the wall charts again and they only deal with the basic digraphs ie sh, ch, ee, or etc.

As he whizzed past stages 4 and 5 in ORT we had a couple of interesting books - such as Sue Kangeroo - which dealt with all the different ways the sound an oo/ew/ue could be made

It is these types of letter combinations I am after

Many thanks for your help so far

I'd ask the teacher

sorry I can't help

I do believe that there's only the 47 'rules' because the others aren't consistent enough to be learned as a rule

indignatio · 26/03/2007 14:21

Thanks Twig - have already asked, but I know she is incredibly busy so thought it would be quicker to ask on MN as someone might be able to point me in the direction of a relevant website - it doesn't help that I don't know the correct english expression for such pairings of letters when googling

isn't it a dipthong?

Issymum · 26/03/2007 14:30

If you go to the Ruth Miskin website and from there to the 'Parents' page you should be able to download the powerpoint presentation that contains all the phonic sounds. I think you can even get an audio version. We bought the very nicely illustrated and well-made phonic sound flashcards for DD1 as I became so concerned that her school was failing to teach the more complex phonics. In fact, I needn't have worried as they are covering all the phonics in Yr 1.

Perfect Issymum - thank you so much

Twig - apparently they are graphemes
