Still not received year six SATs results

Hello. I am new on this site, I have been a browser for quite a while but never needed an account until now.

I am very frustrated with my DD school. I rang the school a few days after the SATs results came out to ask my DD results, they said something about collating the results and not giving them out until the following Monday.

My daughter returned home from school without the results and stated that the teacher had spoken to her about her results, but she did not state whether or not she passed, DD left very confused and anxious.

I called the school again and they refused to tell me DD results over the phone, the person claiming 'they did not have the information personally' but the results would be sent out in the post that week (last week).

Today i STILL do not have the results. This mornings post came with Mondays dates, nothing from the school. I rang the school once again and once again they are refusing to give me the results stating that they dont give results over the phone only post.

Absolute farce, the other parents are in the same position I am but parents with children in other schools have had their results almost two weeks.

Ia this even legal? If anyone can make a suggestion it would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

cantkeepawayforever Yes I've had several go through primary school and never received SATS results for any of them. Ive gone through their end of year school reports and theres no score it just says they passed in all areas or need to improve in xx area. Never had any scores for any of them and I don't know a parent at any school locally that has. Is this a new thing? My eldest is 24 next month and youngest approaching 10. I have several in between who are still at high school and they did SATS and theyre the ones I dont have any results for. We were told years ago by the head SATS are for judging the school and not the children and they felt it unfair to give out scores for parents to then comment between each other at how well/poor everyone else's children had performed against theirs.

Not that it matters but why would I need the SATS scores? If my child is performing below an expected level then I expect the school to tell me well before they sit any exams not throw me a bit of paper at the end of term that says my child is working below the expected level.

cantkeepawayforever · 21/07/2017 09:23

I had SATs results for my now- mid teens - I don't know when this became statutory, but it is absolutely the norm round here. It was in the form of levels, of course, not scores, but the principle was the same.

Trb17 · 21/07/2017 09:57

After my daughter worked her ass off all year 6 towards SATs and after teachers harped on and on about how important they were, I'd be pissed off if they they decided not to give me the results!

eyebrowsonfleek · 21/07/2017 10:35

I received SATS results for my teens. Weren't they curious about their score considering how much time schools spend working towards them?

My kids didn't realise they'd done y2 SATS which is how it should be fine imo.

eyebrowsonfleek · 21/07/2017 10:36

Pompadour - SATS scores used to be in the format of 4b, 5c etc not 34/40 or whatever.

Feenie · 21/07/2017 10:48

Reporting the levels and now the scaled scores has always been a statutory requirement at the end of KS2.

Reporting the teacher assessment at the end of KS1 has been statutory since 2005 - before that tests had to be reported.

Estherbr · 22/07/2017 11:29

Thank you all for your replies, I did not expect so many so fast!

Just an update, I contacted the school once more after still not receiving the results. The person on the phone said the results have been sent to me with 100% certainty as she herself had just done it and just written my address on the envelope alongside the report (this was yesterday, last day of term).

The report arrived today.. NO SAT results. No mention of SAT results. It seems she fobbed me off completely and now they do not have to answer the phone for six weeks. Other parents have said the same, no results, nothing, just a report.

@ Those questioning why I want to see results. Seems like a very odd question, why I would wonder at what level my child is at. Especially a so much time has gone into preparing for these exams, it is all she's spoken about for months in regards to school!

There will almost certainly be someone in school on Monday - I know a number of my school's staff will be in, including the head and deputy. Try going round there in person sometime between 10 and 2 you are very likely to find someone there, though they won't answer the phone, I agree.

Alternatively, is it an academy or a LA school? If a LA, then contact the council to query why the school has not fulfilled its legal obligations. If a MAT, contact the head of the MAT. If a stand-alone academy, it's a bit trickier....

mrz · 22/07/2017 12:27

I think it's unlikely there will be anyone in school on Monday who can provide that information. Your best option is contacting the LA.

FrayedHem · 22/07/2017 15:37

Do you know any parents that had a Yr6 child last year? It would be interesting to compare what the school did then. It does very much sound like the school has something to hide and I hope you're able to get some answers.

Estherbr · 26/07/2017 10:32

I contacted the school Monday and spoke to the same person who told me she had sent out the results.

She was very rude and abrupt. She told me that 'it wasn't her job' to send out the results, that she had 'passed the message on' and if the head did nothing about it then it 'wasn't her issue'.

She told me it wasn't the school's procedure to send out the results, just tell the children, and she could be no further help to me! I told her that I believed it was my legal right to know the result and that I had spoken to my daughter who was very confused and does not know if she passed or not! She told me to ring the school next term and ask the head!

Complete fob off, again!

I contacted the local authority to complain about the school, but they fobbed me off as well. They told me that I cannot put in a complaint unless I followed the school complaints procedure, which is to speak to the head (the head that the school will not allow me to speak with), and if I get no where then contact the governors, and I should have my answer some weeks into the new term (in about 3 months from now)!

Schools like so many institutions in this country are answerable to no one and can do as they please seemingly!

OP posts:
cantkeepawayforever · 26/07/2017 11:04

They are answerable, but you will have to follow the procedure to force them to be answerable. Write to the head, and the governors (address your letter to the Clerk, who should then direct it)

If you have the head's direct e-mail address, e-mail with a copy of your letter attached and say it follows on paper.

Read the complaints procedure and follow it to the letter, taking particular note of any time constraints it places on reply.

I know that complaints can be dealt with over the summer, but you will have to read the rubric carefully.

cantkeepawayforever · 26/07/2017 14:53

Also, document everything.

Create a timeline of who you spoke to and when (rang school on x date, spoke to x who stated y; rang again on z date, this time stated b) .

Include this in your letter to the head and governors, and keep it as evidence to take to the LA if the complaints procedure doesn't come up trumps.

I appreciate that it is very frustrating that the key people now seem to be on holiday. However, many in education will be working 'behind the scenes', so getting your complaints to them, in writing, will eventually get results.

[Your child's secondary will also have their results, by the way. I am not sure how much the primary will like it if you suggest that you will have to contact the secondary head to explain the situation and ask for them to release the results to you in September instead...]

Feenie · 26/07/2017 22:58

I had a similar issue with my ds's school who told me they didn't have to report my ds's phonics Y2 score, or their school's results or a national comparison, because the LEA had told them they didn't have to. Sijce I had just personal reported all those results at my school, I knew this was rubbish.

My first (unsuccessful) email pointed the head to the relevant statutory documentation.

My second copied in an answer I'd received from the dfe and the I cced it to the relevant advisors at the LEA that she claimed had misadvised her.

I received a grovelling apology with the relevant results in the first week of September, but it took that long. I'm sure you could find out the relevant advisors' emails and the dfe query address in that time and copy them in. It was very satisfying.

Estherbr · 28/07/2017 16:57

I have been in contact with the school head. He rang me and told me that he would e-mail me the result.

I gave him my e-mail address and he simply sent me a document saying 'passed'. No scaled score.

I them replied to him stating that I want the score sent to me, to which he has replied saying that all the school are obliged to do are send me a 'Pass' or 'Fail'.

I guess the next step is to contact the school governors, this is turning into a farce now.

Refer him to

Still not received year six SATs results
user789653241 · 28/07/2017 19:49

It's quite silly that school think they can fob off parents so easily with lies. Don't they realise there's something called internet these days?

thekillers · 28/07/2017 22:04

is this year 2 or year 6? You don't actually say.

FrayedHem · 28/07/2017 22:07

@thekillers - the thread is titled "still not received year 6 SATs results"

user1495443009 · 28/07/2017 22:46

Completely unacceptable; what sort of school is this. I would be annoyed too; what are they hiding? Why they don't communicate with parents and are not transparent? I would send a letter to the Head Teacher and governors; copy the LA if necessary.

It seems to me they are not happy about the results in general and are hiding something.

DiamondAge · 29/07/2017 08:21

One other thing you could try, although it is, perhaps, the nuclear option, is advising the head that your request could be considered a subject access request under the data protection act.

All types of school are covered, although in slightly different ways: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk/help-and-advice/the-right-to-see-your-childs-educational-records/amp

This option doesn't directly force the school to provide you with the information more quickly (40 school days is a long wait), however subject access requests are potentially far more onerous as you can ask the school for all of your daughters records (they will only provide what they have to but this will still be a lot if she's been at this school since reception).

Given how much work is involved when responding to a subject access request, and the fact that non compliance is reportable to the ICO, the head may see sense and decide that providing you with a few scores now is a better use of the schools resources.

So you might consider a carefully worded email explaining that you are beginning to feel that you are being pushed towards making a subject access request, which seems like a lot of work for everyone and which you'd rather not have to do given that you are only asking for a very small amount of information to which you are legally entitled.

Out of interest are the other parents making the same request as you - would it help if a joint email from a group of parents was sent so that the head teacher sees the school will end up making far more work for themselves by not proving the results as they should (I imagine they would definitely want to avoid multiple subject access requests).
