Year 2 report - "Signifcantly above expectations"

Going through DS2's school report. The categories are: Working below, working towards, working within, working above, working significantly above. DS2 is a bright boy and in the top set for maths and english. He got mostly "working above" , two "working within" and "working significantly above" (spelling). Just wondering how hard it is to get "significantly above" - it feels like they have introduced another level to make it harder for the kids to feel like they are doing well.

Legally they need to use the levels working towards, meeting or greater depth. They don't need to release raw SATs scores, but they can or you are able to ask for them. DD got 39/40 on reading and 59/60 in maths so was awarded GD in both, but this had to be backed up with evidence in books (her school was moderated).

That's not quite right - the tests don't assess GD. Your dd was awarded GD purely because of the work in her books.

As far as I know, Feenie the KS1 tests can be used to back up a teacher's judgement of a child's level? Obviously the work in the books is much more valuable to making the jusdgement, but evidence of application in a test is certainly strong evidence of a child's ability. Maybe I should have put and was awarded GD rather than so? It's the first proper day of the holidays so I'm not as coherent as I might usually be Grin

No, the tests don't assess greater depth or back up a greater depth assessment. The evidence for greater depth is all from work in books, assessed against the Interim Framework for teacher assessment.

Greater depth can not be awarded based on the test results. In order to achieve GD they must fulfil the criteria in the Interim assessment framework (not tested).

Our school reports divide GD into 4 levels, 2 at working above expected level and 2 at working well-above expected level. In total there are 9 levels, 4 at GD, 2 at WA and 3 at WT.

They are all made up, as schools are free to do in all year groups except Y2 and Y6 when they must use the official three categories.

our school report below, at or above. they then give effort marks and progress marks between 1 and 5. For me the effort marks are the first thing I look at.
