Missed reception- help to catch up

My ds was schooled in Switzerland last year and basically missed out on reception (he went to school, but only touched on phonics and really basic maths - recognising numbers 1-10). How do I help him narrow the gap of what he has missed? We have the summer to work on this a little. Although I must add - he is a resistant learner!

Does he start school in year 1 come September?
Is he one of the older ones or younger?

Have you spoken to the school. They might have some ideas of activities or the most important bits to focus on.

I think there's still quite alot of variability in kids beginning of year 1, so some will be reading books, counting in 2s 5s 10s , simple arithmatic etx. However there will be those still working on simple sentences, your child won't be the only one.

My friend had a similar situation and had to pay for a tutor once a week for her DS. They school were great as well though and he is now at the right level for his age.

Over the summer read to him lots, count every thing, play shops with real money, doesn't matter if it's Swiss money, play with factions in real life. Cut pizza in half, cut it in Quarters, cook, weigh things out. When shopping get him to collect six oranges, 10 peaches. Biggest melon, smallest box washing powder etc. Possibly telling the time.
Does he recognise his name and can he write it.
If he can write try writing notes to each other. If not wait till school but practice fine motor activities, lego, painting, etc cooking is good for this too.
Ensure he can sit and listen, put his coat on and off and hang it on a peg. Get dressed and undressed for pe. Carry a tray for lunch. Wipe his bum. Ask to go to the toilet.
Most schools are used to pupils coming from other education systems . Most kids catch up fast

Watch alphablocks, number blocks and number jacks on cbebbies. Ask school which phonics they are using ours is jolly phonics. Read lots including poems and fairy tales. Clapping simple rhythms. In our school that would do plus lots of junk modeling, sand pit play and block building. Plus learning to take turns and estimate numbers.
