Year 2 and upwards and onwards

I have multiple questions I suppose.

My year 2 son got greater depth for English and maths.

The school also put him as greater depth for science, history, computing etc. It is just I thought you could only get greater depth etc for the topics that had sats assigned to them? As i understand it this means he has exceeded age related expectations - so should I ask for test results or chat to the teacher to see how far he has exceeded to know what needs to be worked on.

Also really pleased with his effort - to be fair my husband and I have had one hell of a truly truly awful year with huge hours at work and Ill health, family who do not live near being very ill and without going into anymore drama we nearly considered splitting up.

So due to circumstances we have not been able to support our son as well as we would have hoped in terms of helping with any homework and because life was just so stressful and I felt so guilt ridden but I just tried to do relaxing or nice activities outside school to show him we cared about him and didn't want to transfer stress his way or cause him trauma but I am sure some of it must have rubbed off but he doesn't show it.

I do always speak positively about school but privately I had kind of written off him doing that well at school and thought he would reach expected because the teachers always were positive about him and he tries so hard but genuinely thought for greater depth we would somehow need to work wth him.

The school also show effort and said he is such a hard worker and all around friendly boy who helps others. In passing before I got the report the teacher pulled me aside and said that he makes an effort to ensure a child who is nonverbal is included in everything and that him doing this has really helped this other child and the mum of this child also wanted to pass it on.

I do want to really thank this teacher and to be fair all his teachers from reception to now have been brilliant. They don't know about our circumstances.

Should I write a note to the head pointing out how grateful I am for the supportive atmosphere and wonderful teaching - what else can I do?

As for my son I am taking him on a mini break and really looking forward to it. I am now redundant so will need to work but just want to take some time with my son for a while too and avoid the awful business of usual life for a little while.

Just read that back and it seems really self indulgent sorry - proud of my lovely son though.

The school can assess other subjects as they wish, so the GDSs for other subjects is permissible.

It is worth noting that GDS stands for Greater Depth Within the Standard. i.e. deeper within the curriculum, not working at year group ahead.

The GDS in English and maths will be the teacher assessment against the criteria from these Interim Teacher Assessment Frameworks rather than the test scores. You can ask the teacher for the test scores if you wish, but a chat with the teacher about what to work on next would be far more useful.

And, yes, a note would be really appreciated. Its things like that we, as teachers, treasure.

Please write a note to head and staff - they keep them as references

They will be happy!

They get so many complaints

Thank you both Smile
