Year 6 sats results and teacher assessment

Some advice needed please😁My ds has worked so hard this year and in teacher assessments he has got reading working above year 6 maths working above year 6 level and writing working towards year 6. On sats he got reading 114 maths 101 and spag 101. Don't get me wrong I'm super proud of him I thought he would score higher for maths and spag. Will this affect where he will be placed in secondary school for sets? Or will they go by teacher assessment?thanks

Depends on the school. Some will use the SATs test results, Some will do their own assessments on entry.

I don't know if many will use the teacher assessment result over the test result.

I am sure there are others who had a bad day on Sats day. (I can clearly see that may happen with my ds)
If you are worried, you can always go speak to the teacher when he starts. Teacher giving above average TA despite getting average score in sats must mean he was regularly doing better through out whole yr6.

Secondary school are measured by the government on progress from the reading and maths sats exam ie in your case the average of 101 and 114. Therefore that gives him an above average score so they will need to show at least similar progress for GCSE. The measure does not included spag or writing and schools have no choice in the measure the government use.

Irvine - he hasn't done worse in exams that the teacher predicted. There is no exam in writing it is all teacher assessed and this is presumably his weaker area. However writing at secondary is different and may suit him better

101/114 are expected not average

FloofyFloo · 17/07/2017 06:33

100 is the age related expectation. 101 means he has demonstrated in a test that he is at the age related expectation.114 is above the expectation (over 110).
It might be worthwhile speaking with his teacher about why he is below ARE in writing (what targets he has) and why they've said above when he hasn't scored as highly in maths. At year 6 I though TA had to be in line with test results, even if that's not really reflective of classroom ability. Also with a very good reading score, and expected in spag I would expect writing to be in line with this and would be concerned as to why he hadn't got there, unless there are specific areas you are already aware of.

Not sure it will affect secondary though, they will move him if his work is different to what they expect.

mnistooaddictive · 17/07/2017 06:44

Every secondary is different, in ours a score of 101 would mean set 3. I work in a comprehensive in a high achieving area and you need 112 or above for set 1. That is inlybyo start with though and we are very aware that it doesn't take into account other factors and we need to make changes during the year.

OK, 101 for maths maybe below national average but expected level for yr6?

Lego, but op's dc got above expected TA for maths, but for Sats he only got 101. I assumed he's done worse than teacher expected on sats but generally working at higher level in class.

mrz · 17/07/2017 06:50

The "above expectations" hasn't been published/decided yet. It was 110 last year but very much depends on this year's bell curve.

TooHotTooCold · 17/07/2017 11:02

My daughter is the opposite. Scored highly in the sats papers but her classroom work must have been lower as she is meeting expectations. I'm a bit worried that her sats results will mean she is in the top set

GuestWW · 17/07/2017 11:44

@TooHotTooCold there is no 'exceeding' in Maths, Reading or SPAG. It is only meet expectations or not. They can only be 'working at greater depth' in writing which is teacher assessed.

TooHotTooCold · 17/07/2017 11:53

She got two reports and there was a note saying that although they can only give working at greater depth for writing on the sats bit the teacher says if they are getting this level for maths and English, in the other part of the report (the bit that covers all different lessons)

TeenAndTween · 17/07/2017 15:39

However they are initially set, any decent school will adjust sets if a child is clearly in the wrong one. (DDs school only initially sets for maths, then English at Oct half term, then other things in y8.)
