Errors in school report -wwyd?

School reports out this week. The report for DS (4) was several days late as teacher told me there were mistakes in it and she was having problems getting into the system to amend it. Handed it yesterday and there are still errors, namely several references to a different child in it, which makes me question whether the points being made are actually correct for my son or this other boy......

We have been asked to sign a slip to say we received the reports with space for any comments so do I point out the errors? So as to avoid drip feeding I already have a somewhat rocky relationship with this teacher due to her general incompetence but mainly her poor handling of one of my other my children (DS 5) and I will have yet another year of dealing with her as she is both Reception class teacher and head of nursery.

Send it back to the Head with a note outlining errors. I presume Head may have also signed it?

I did this with a school report which had been signed by class teacher, and endorsed by Head. The report made reference to another child by name, commented on a subject my son didn't even take, and called him a sportswoman.

The report was amended but I had no faith that the comments made within it actually appertained to my son, but I did feel it was worth drawing the Head's attention to it.

Absolutely do. There should be several cross checks before they go out to parents.
Ours were shoddy last year, the comments were very bland and there were 3 mistakes in DD's. I wrote it in the feedback.
They were a lot better this year- received today.

Happy, you are right, the Head also had added her comments so should have noticed. We have had so much drama with middle DS and this teacher all year which is why I'm reluctant to stir any more up but it really isn't good enough, is it?

I think a fair bit of reports are cut and pasted. Wrong name in the middle of ds report today.

britespark1 · 14/07/2017 22:05

I do sort of expect the copy and paste thing but it annoys me more because of the delay in handing it to me in order to correct it, and then give it out with errors in anyway.

report every single mistake. Say you have no confidence in the report

Cut and pasted reports here too. Called my DD "he" a couple of times. I think its probably a bit churlish to mention it tho.

Stargirl82 · 14/07/2017 22:20

As a teacher I would be mortified if I had made a mistake! But as a parent I would bring it back to school and point out mistakes.

Give to the head? Even if it's just a reminder for the class teacher that their reports weren't up to standard and they need to be next year!

Huffletuff · 14/07/2017 22:23

Our reports are generated by our tracking system so are generic until we add in our own comments if necessary. However, they are proof read and countersigned by another teacher, then the head. You need to point out the mistakes, preferably to the head as it shouldn't have happened.

I don't take reports too seriously since something similar happened early on in my 'school mum' life.

One mum last year posted her sons report to facebook gushing and going on and on about how his teacher knows him so well & how amazing he is. No word of a lie, it was word for word the same Grin

I just think they have a lot to do, a lot of kids to remember so...tbh I'd rather have nothing than the usual generic blah but I expect theyve got boxes to tick

Hm. Sorry to distract but I am also wondering if I should mention an error.

Received DS Y2 report today, consisting of a) a sheet giving SATS test results, and end-of-key-stage-1 teacher assessments; and b) the 'usual' (for our school) end of year report that gives fairly extensive and detailed comments, and effort/attainment grading for a whole range of subjects, and the school internal progress/attainment grading results for reading, writing and Maths.

Now the end-of-key-stage-1 teacher assessment, being very brief and just numbers and grades, shows that DS is 'working at the expected standard' for writing.

However the school internal report includes the phrase 'brilliotic-DS is working at greater depth within the expected standard in Writing because he is able to ...' and the examples that follow are AFAIK the kind of things required for achieving GDS.

So I am unsure which one is right and which one is a typo/copy-paste error. I suspect the EXS on the KS1-assessment sheet is correct and the GDS in the text was copy-pasted from another child by mistake, but I can't be sure.

At the most recent parents' evening in March the teacher said she hoped she could get DS to GDS level in Writing but he wasn't quite there yet, so I am curious as to which one it is!

Would that be worth inquiring about? Pointing out the error - either way, one of the two reports is incorrect. I am unsure because we (DS and I) liked the teacher, and the teacher is leaving the school. In some way I feel it doesn't really matter but in another way, if they are going to assess such young children against a national framework, I would kind of like to know the result!

5achel · 14/07/2017 23:51

Grin I thought for a minute there the teacher had said he was brilliotic! Wow that's even better than brilliant Grin
Well it would be good to know which it is but are you bothered enough to ask? What difference would it make? If i were you I'd just ask face to face which it is with his teacher next year at the first consultation.
