We have just received my daughters SAT S results at parents evening and she has not achieved in maths (98 )and reading( 94 ) but she got 110 in SPAG. The teacher assessment though was working at expected level for all 4 subjects reading writing maths and science. We did lots of practice at home but she didn't quite make it. Her teacher has nothing but praise for her. She said her results Should be much higher than they are as she is so hard working and the work she does in class is always of a high standard, hence why the teacher assessment is expected. Do the secondary take into account teacher assessment or do they base streams/classes on SATS results?? Also her cousin in a different school in a different part of the countryb got below 100 in all 3 exams but is exceptionally bright and she passed the grammar exam and her family are worried her place will be taken away. Can they do this

No they can't take her place away but they may find atthe end if year 7 they ask her to leave. Grammar schools live in exam results so if the child can't deliver results however bright will be asked to leave. Our grammar schools lose a lot at the end of year 7 the kids who were tutored for the 11+ but can't sustain it. My daughter has just done her sats too and before she sat them the teacher told us that if the exams went wrong for her( luckily she did very well) and she didn't get what she could the assessment the teacher sends to the secondary school would say that, so if your child is at the expected level but didn't quite get the magic 100 the new school should look at the assessment as well. Good luck x

I have heard of them having discussions with parents and advise you to consider other options but I am not sure that failure to achieve is grounds for withdrawing a grammar school place. Here once you are in you are in. Also presumably the cousin is state educated so there are likely to find a grammar school a better environment than their state school. Thos who really struggle are those from small private school classes who have also had lots of tutoring.

It varies from school to school as to what they base setting/streaming on but virtually everywhere say that they will move children around as appropriate. Most children from independent schools will not have done SATs anyway.

Maybe work on some skills over the summer a little a day so she is more confident going into secondary school.
