You do the math...

TeenAndTween · 11/07/2017 20:38

Well, it is better than 80/110, but less good than 100/110.

Well it sounds quite good to me, however I don't work in education so was hoping it get a bit more of an idea of averages etc from people that know a lot more than I do

Well, 90/110 is about 82% correct. So it's good if class average is 78%, but if 90%, below average.
How would we know average of your dc's own school's test?

Ask the teacher.

user1492337624 · 11/07/2017 20:46

But surely you would know national averages etc ?

OP posts:
sirfredfredgeorge · 11/07/2017 20:47

There is no national year 5 test, so it would be impossible to compare.

spanieleyes · 11/07/2017 20:49

What national averages? There are no statutory assessments in year 5 so every school could have a different system, no-one collects any data and there are no national averages. So, really, your guess is as good as mine!

user1492337624 · 11/07/2017 20:58

Well that was a bit of a waste of time then !

OP posts:
Goingtobeawesome · 11/07/2017 21:01

Who are the "you" that would know the national average?

mrz · 11/07/2017 21:02

Why is it a waste of time? It tells the teachers what your child can do and where they struggle which is far more important that a percentage.

I got full marks but I'm in year 6.

BertrandRussell · 11/07/2017 21:10

Ask the teacher what the class average is. There isn't a standardized country wide year 5 test, so nobody can say wither it's good or bad nationally.

Intheknickersoftime · 11/07/2017 21:17

You asked if the score was good. It's like asking how long is a piece of string. Its the progress your child has made that's important. What has the teacher said? If a child had progressed from scoring 50 to 70 that would also be a good score. You've not really asked a question that is meaningful for your own unique child.

stupidphone · 12/07/2017 00:00

Was it a GL test? Ours have them. Thought they are age related uk average results. On our results it said under 90 was under average, 100 average and 110 and over was over average. We just had a long heated parents evening as DD has dropped again and they won't give extra help.

Bunnyjo · 12/07/2017 00:20

OP, the problem is nobody knows what maths assessment your DC took at school. There are numerous maths assessment packages available to schools; GL, Rising Stars (PUMA) and Pearson to name just a few. A score of 90/110 could be average, good or outstanding, but it is meaningless without putting into context - both in terms of the assessment and the attainment over the year as a whole.

As it is coming to the end of the school year, I am assuming you have a parents' evening approaching; my advice would be to ask your DC's teacher how they are doing, not Mumsnet.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/07/2017 21:33

Tests in Wales?

They do test in maths and reading in y2 through to y9 nationally in Wales.
