NFER Scores Help

I have just received his end of year report and to be honest I am struggling to understand what it means. In particular the Nfer.

The report says:

NFER Mathematics SAS 122

Suffolk Reading
Chronological Age: 5.83
Age Score: 8.58

Youngs Spelling
Chronological Age: 5.83
Age Score: 9.08

Any guidance appreciated, particularly with the NFER.

It's a test that gives standardised scores.

Usually scores are SAS between 85 and 116 is expected and so gives an idea of a child is working above or below.

The other 2 are quite explanatory at 5.8yrs your dc reading age is x and spelling age y. Therefore above expected achievement for chronological age.

To give an example of how it can work progress wise at 8.8 my ds spelling age was 5.9. At 10.9 it was 6.1 and at 12.1 it was 6.2.

So he wasn't able to learn spellings beyond that level without specific and targeted support as usual learning techniques didn't work for him.

You may find next year at 6.8 your dc spelling and reading is only 6 months above what it is now. It doesn't necessarily mean they haven't made expected progress but rather they've learnt things early and flourished young. There is a ceiling for reading and spelling age that children reach at different stages. But the tests indicate what words and books they should be working on.

I wouldn't read too much into testing at aged 5. He is currently performing "better" than the average child of his age but progress may not be linear going forwards.

Many thanks for all your responses.

I agree 5 is too young to take anything from testing. I'm just struggling to understand what it all means. I know he reads well but the maths figure means nothing to me.

Once again thank you for your all your help.

Maths score of sas 122 means he's achieving above age expectations currently.

Sas expected is between 85/116

AlexanderHamilton · 04/07/2017 19:44

In standardised scores 100 is the average with a standard deviation of 15.

So a score of 85-115 is average
Below 85 is below average
116 - 129 is above average
130 plus is exceptional

Alexander thank you so much for clarifying. Thank you to everyone for their really helpful advice. X
