Why do teachers moan so much?

I'm a teacher. I'm good at my job, use my time efficiently, very happy with my salary, and spend all of the holidays with my DC. My colleagues do nothing but moan, but I just see the good things in my job.

OP posts:

You are a comedian too !!! Well done not doing any planning, marking or assessment. Or any CPD. Or any rewriting of SOW or lesson plans as curriculum is altered. You are a genius. I start at 7.30 and finish at 5 most days. Then mark most nights for an hour (I teach about 230 kids a week). Then spend holidays doing above stuff. I love my job - just hate the crap admin that now has to go with it. I'm currently writing UCAS references for year 12 and will be reviewing their PS over the summer.

I'm assuming the island you live on is called Fantasy.

BubblesBuddy · 30/06/2017 13:36

Oh dear Living. I am just waiting for the abuse to start! I would take cover.

ScipioAfricanus · 30/06/2017 17:39

How nice for you! Maybe your colleagues are not as good as you and that's why they have to work harder or don't find it as gratifying?

DrDreReturns · 30/06/2017 17:41

Because it's a difficult job. I tried teaching and couldn't do it.

Tell us more....

How long have you been teaching?
What age group do you teach?
What is the demographic of your pupil cohort?
Is your school RI, good, outstanding?
What hours do you work in school?
What hours do you work at home?
How much of your holidays do you normally work?

How supportive is your management team?
Why are you on mumsnet at 11.00 on a Friday morning?

Just curious......

MrsKCastle · 30/06/2017 18:57

I love my job and I don't moan outside the staffroom, but it can be bloody tough at times. I envy teachers who can say 'I'm good at my job' because personally I always feel that I'm never quite good enough. There's always the child who still is spelling well, who still has low self-esteem, who still hasn't quite mastered their times tables etc.

So it's great that you enjoy teaching OP, but let's not pretend it's automatically an easy and satisfying job. I don't believe my job is the hardest, the worst paid, teachers have it so hard and so on. But I do get angry when it's portrayed in social media as a piece of piss, 9-3 with long holidays, without any acknowledgement that there are difficulties as well.

MrsKCastle · 30/06/2017 18:58

Still isn't spelling well, not still is. How ironic.

leccybill · 30/06/2017 19:01

I taught in a school in special measures in an extremely deprived and crime-ridden area for a long time. The paperwork and endless behaviour management was exhausting. I moaned a lot.
I work somewhere much nicer now. I don't moan much. Maybe a bit today because some teens told me to fuck off.
It's all relative I suppose.

Feenie · 30/06/2017 20:00

Why would anyone post that on a Friday night? I love my job, but it's the end of a long hard week for most people.

Did you not work hard this week, OP?

Do you generally have problems with tact and diplomacy?

JamAndBread · 30/06/2017 20:15

I'm a teacher. I too am good at my job and use my time efficiently.

However I'm still able to understand that it's impossible to fit 60+ hours of work every week into the 32.5 contracted hours.

I'm also able to recognise the ever moving goal posts that we are held accountable against.

And I'm also able to see that children are more stressed and less happy than ever.

I love my job. But there's no avoiding the utterly utterly depressing facts OP. Maybe your colleagues are moaning because they're human.

soimpressed · 30/06/2017 20:20

Maybe they don't like you?

ShatnersBassoon · 30/06/2017 20:20

This isn't unique to teaching, op. Go into any staff room in any workplace; 90% of the staff will be bitching about the workload while the rest sit there wondering what they're moaning about.

Either that or they're all just really crap compared to you, Hun.

Hmm
PurpleDaisies · 30/06/2017 20:23

Do you want a badge or something? Hmm

user1483972886 · 30/06/2017 21:58

My sister teaches at a private school and has moaned relentlessly for the last 30 years
My aunt works in a student referral unit and bucks the trend by not moaning and enjoying her job!

BoneyBackJefferson · 30/06/2017 22:03

Because pointing out others misinformation is moaning.

oldestmumaintheworld · 30/06/2017 22:14

Because they start young and haven't done anything else and therefore have nothing to compare it to.
Because they are in the wrong job.
Because they can

I have three sisters in law who are teachers. Two of them are fantastic teachers and don't moan at all. The other one is crap and moans nonstop.

I think if you hate it and moan all the time you should stop being a teacher.

backwardnames · 30/06/2017 22:20

More to the point how supportive is your family? DH I is a teacher and he thinks all the other teachers moan too much. What he forgets is that he has someone that cooks, launders and cleans. Most teachers don't have that luxury.

It's therapeutic to get it out of your system ...doesn't mean they don't love their jobs or aren't very good teachers.

junebirthdaygirl · 01/07/2017 05:48

Im a teacher in lreland and if l had to do what UK teachers do l would moan. However l do notice at times that colleagues can fall into a habit of moaning. Think every staffroom is different and some have an atmosphere of constant complaining. My friend works in a profession that means regular visits to schools and staffrooms and says teachers are desperate moaners compared to her place of work which is also stressful.
Im not moaning today though. First day of holidays!!

pmppns · 01/07/2017 06:22

I'm not a teacher but I think everyone likes a moan about their job. I work in a shop, not hard work or demanding but we still moan. I have also worked in a school as a TA, seen the pressure put on all staff not just teachers- so no wonder they like a moan. It's good to get it out then something can be done about it.

raptorclaw · 01/07/2017 13:49

Because I work 70 hours a week and still keep getting more admin to do. Not all schools are like yours OP.

trinity0097 · 01/07/2017 20:56

I feel I'm entitled to a moan now and again when I've not had a day off in the last 3 weeks and am set to have no days off until next Sunday. I will have 7 nights holiday and then one day off after that and then I will be back at work pretty much full time until September. Not sure where all these 'teacher' holidays are but I struggle to take off as much time as my husband, an accountant! Plus he gets most weekends and I normally have to work at least one day every weekend.

My head and I sat slumped in her office yesterday for 5 minutes bemoaning the fact we go to bed tired, get up tired and have to deal with crisis after crisis at the moment! Today I was at school between 9.30 and 5pm, plus I have a 30min commute each way. Tomorrow I shall be there from about 8am, and will probably leave about 3pm, depending on how meetings go with my head when she gets in (she is not a morning person so will arrive about 11am and stay until the evening). Not sure when I will get the shopping done!!!

Doesn't mean I don't like my job, but it is tough!
