Soft and comfortable uniform

My DS will be starting school in September so I'm starting to think about uniform. I was in Asda today and the trousers were all synthetic and really stiff. They felt so uncomfortable to touch I can't imagine them on. Not sure if its the Teflon coating?

Is all uniform like this or can you buy stuff that still wears well but feels better. Thanks

Marks and Spencer do some specifically for children with sensory issues/autism and allergies- it's soft, seam and label free. They also do 100% cotton shorts.

DonkeyOaty · 22/06/2017 21:50

If you're not a tad squeamish about 2nd hand clothing charity shop ones are usually softened by prior wear. Am reluctant to say get the autism friendly stuff as imo we should leave enough for the children who would really benefit from the range but also am aware that could be patronising.

No not squeamish about 2nd hand of in good condition but actually my son dies have sensory issues so that range might be just what I need. Thank you

Excellent! Happy shopping!

George do some girls school trousers which are lovely soft sort of cotton jersey, but def school trousers - quite smart. Do they not do a boys version? (Never looked I'm afraid!)

canihaveacoffeeplease · 22/06/2017 22:42

Totally irrelevant but my phone has a cracked screen that led me to read your title as 'soft and comfortable unicorn' which had me really excited. Sorry for being no help at all!!

nam207 · 22/06/2017 22:53

Haha, that would have been a far more interesting thread.

Just looked on m&s the skin kind range is probably OK for my son. The range mentioned above in case anyone is interested is called easy dressing

My dd wears the skin kind range as all the coatings affect her eczema they are definately softer. I have found well washed sainsburies polo shirts are ok and stay much softer than Tescos or adsa which go crispy when washed.

Paperclipmover · 22/06/2017 22:59

Would he be able to wear jogging bottoms instead of proper trousers? They spend a lot of time outside in reception so something easy to move in makes sense. The schools round my way just say the colour of the trousers , not the type, so most children wear leggings or joggers.

I've got a DD so not tried school trousers, she wears the joggers or a skirt. George skirts are fine but the almost identical skirt from marks is thicker, feels nicer but is three times the price.

What colour do the trousers need to be?

halcyondays · 22/06/2017 23:04

Asda do girls' school trousers and skirts that have a lovely soft feel but I don't know if they do any boys stuff in the same material.

CruCru · 22/06/2017 23:21

I order school shorts and trousers from John Lewis. I've tried M&S but their stuff was all stiff and shiny so back it went. I think JL also do cotton trousers.

nam207 · 23/06/2017 06:29

Thanks. I'll have a look at Sainsbury's and John Lewis too then.

The trousers do need to be trousers but in black or grey so at least standard colour.

I guess it's just a learning curve and advice here helps not having to go to all the shops.

Does anyone know about Debenhams or matalan? They seem to be the other two places for school stuff x

We get the M&S easy dressing range, but the trousers ds likes best are the ones I bought in the 2nd uniform sale that are so worn they look like they're going to fall apart!

If socks, vests etc are an issue hen Sensory Smart (online) are very good.

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 23/06/2017 06:37

Matalan do soft jersey style trousers for girls, I'm not sure about the range for boys though sorry. The polo shirts are softer than the Tu ones we have. I generally get the uniform from Matalan - they are good value, they wash well and they have a good range.

Michaelahpurple · 23/06/2017 09:14

My boys whined about me buying to mush second hand stuff until I caught shirt between sales and so had to buy new, and they then realised how much nicer knackered poly cotton shirts and grey trousers are than new ones!
I definitely support the second hand softening process ( the general population equivalent of getting the butler to break in One's new Barbour !)

gigglingHyena · 23/06/2017 10:10

We had the M&S skin kind ones for a couple of years. They were nice and soft cotton but didn't wear that well. The knees wore thin and tore on both children's (and my DD is usually pretty gentle on trousers, unlike DS). We stuck with them though as I didn't find anything else at a reasonable price.

I wasn't able to find them last year, I thought they might have stopped doing them. Good to know they are still around.

nam207 · 23/06/2017 20:03

Not so good if the M&S ones get worn out quickly but I guess he needs to be comfortable as the priority.

Might try some of the local children's nearly new sales too if second hand means more comfy Smile

Off-topic but in reply to DonkeyOekey: Am reluctant to say get the autism friendly stuff as imo we should leave enough for the children who would really benefit from the range

It's a good thought but you need to remember that shops like m&s are just businesses at heart. If not enough people buy the range this year, then they will stop stocking it completely next year and everyone will lose out. I would absolutely encourage you to get that range if you think it would help (although maybe think twice if the item you want is low stock)
