Help - year 2 maths DD is struggling - ideas?

Hi all

DD (7) is battling with year 2 maths. School has said we need to start working with her on some basics, including place values and fractions.

Does anyone have ideas for resources, games, good websites, good books? We have bought her some Diennes and place value cards.

Help much appreciated. Will rant later in chat about why this is only emerging now...

Hi
How is dd with other areas of maths like number bonds, 1 to 1 correspondence, simple addition? Place value is a big one that alot of children have issues with.. Particularly at age 7...
Topmarks is a good website and it has some great games for all areas, many also work on a tablet.. Hit the button is one I think is really great. You can choose from a range of topics such as number bonds all the way to multiplication and division..
Mathletics and education city are great website that allow children to work at their own level. I'm not sure if you can sign up as a parent though. (Im a teacher and we have a school amount which means each child has their own login for use at home)..

Intro to place value:khan
Abacus is great for recognising place value.
Also there are many fraction educational toys which makes it easier for child to visualise and understand the fractions.

I bought the abacus work books for
My ds and we work through them. Sometimes their misunderstanding goes a long way back and doing the workbooks together has enabled me to go back and explain the missing links.

My sons maths is actually pretty goodnow and things just seem to be clicking into place
He sometimes ask me to explain something as he says i make it easier than the teacher but i think its just a case of sometimes going right back to the very basis.

Get a set of Numicon and Cuisenaire if you can to help with place value.

ELC used to do addition and times tables snap cards.

Get your DD to bake with you, and weigh out the ingredients.

When my now 19 year old was small, I used to get her to say the odd numbers of the houses we walked past. And the even on the way back.

Play shop/cafes with her, and get her to count out the money.

Not really answering your question, but I think it all helps!

These are all fantastically useful and helpful resources. THANK YOU

I've been worrying and it's really hard to work out with the school what she does and doesn't need to work on; her teachers are jobshare and both say different things etc. Really grateful. Thanks

Get the place value cracked first as she will come unstuck if she doesn't get that. Good luck x

School may be willing to lend you some numicon or cuisinaire to try. Let's of good dice and card games too, and shut the box.

Monopoly.

I bought another copy of DS's maths book for at home and did a little bit every night and he made big improvements. This worked well as the maths book is structured in a way that everyday you build on what you learned yesterday. 10 months ago he was struggling to add 3 + 4 in his head and now he can add numbers like 33 + 54 + 17 in his head.

We recently found this site, Mathopolis which is sister site to another great site Mathsisfun

Mathopolis has lots of short practice/exercises. And Mathsisfun is great for explaining methods and as a maths dictionary. I use it all the time when I got stuck.

We found ourselves in this position - tried Khan Academy but found
mathsfactor was the solution for us.

It had lots of practise, very needed for one of mine, but also I could mainly leave them to get on with it just needing to be around - so could see to other children or get on with tea. Plus got around the whole you'll teach her the wrong methods that was thrown at us a bit.

Child in this position in year 2 started secondary this year - went into top set for maths.

We're currently doing a month's free trail of mathswhizz - my older two have finished mathsfactor so looking round for something else - especially as secondary school has math teacher shortage and top set only had a maths teacher for half their lessons.

irvineoneohone links look very interesting so will be looking at some of those later for us.

If you look at my thread (from 19/6/17) asking about the national curriculum, several people have given me fab advice about tackling maths and links to good materials!

Dragonbox numbers is a good app, my kids like it.
