End of term teacher gift ideas please

The end of term will be coming up soon, just pondering on end of term gifts for dc's teachers. ds is leaving primary this year so I feel like it should be a bigger gift for his teacher that has had him for the last two years. What about smaller gifts for teachers and ta for reception class for dd to give? I don't want to do choc as last year my dc's teachers were weighed down by it, I have also heard that lots of schools don't allow their teachers to accept alcohol, so something else please.

Homemade art, something along the lines of the attached picture?
Stationery? Something like a nice handwriting pen, a set of Sharpie markers or a set of fancy post-it notes.
Paperweight?
Desk tidy?
You end up overloaded with things like mugs (they generally end up in the staffroom cup cupboard in my experience) and I think you're right to avoid chocolates and wine because, again, you end up overloaded with them.

I do practical things - pens, post-its plus an ikea blue bag each as they're handy at work, carrying marking, or at home.

I refuse to buy "best teacher" mugs or the like and get DS to design a card himself rather than buy one.

SteelyPip · 13/06/2017 11:29

I got this for my son's teacher last year.

Allthebestnamesareused · 13/06/2017 11:58

Wine and Gin are usually welcomed. Even non-drinkers say that they like to get it because it keeps and can be taken to bbqs and parties over the summer etc.

You could do a small gift for the teacher but a gift for the school so vouchers, a bundle of lovely coffee /tea/ biscuits. A parent bought our school a coffee pod machine last year, that went down well with the teachers.

How about a box of biccies in the next week or two for the staff room and a general note to everyone thanking them. That way, TAs, teachers, etc are all included. Don't do it near the end of term. Or a voucher for googleplay or the like is nice. Pot plant rather than flowers? I have to say it is what is written in the cards that means the most. Perhaps books for the library would be good.

fleshmarketclose · 13/06/2017 13:43

I send biscuits for the staff room in the week before they break up. Easy for me, no angst that I might have missed someone and I drop them at reception so dd doesn't have to cart them in. Dd either makes or writes on a card and for any teacher or TA I think has gone the extra mile I email them to thank them personally and copy in the HT.

I had little stamps made including the teachers name along the lines of: "Mrs X says great work" the following year they had doubled in price!

pastapestoparmesan · 13/06/2017 14:16

Gift cards for coffee chains are my favourite.

Anne511 · 13/06/2017 14:47

Something small that's really nice, from a nice shop. Like a really nice soap or pretty pair of socks, nice mug!

When dd1 finished yr6 we gave her main teacher an umbrella & lightweight scarf both decorated with a design to do with her subject/hobby/passion.

For the numerous TAs (all female) that had worked with her throughout her time at the school we did something similar to what SteelyPip suggested but we made up our own kit - floral gardening gloves, floral garden trowel, a couple of packs of seeds all tied together with garden twine & a flowery label, on which dd wrote 'thank you for helping me grow'. All the bits were bought at pound type stores so it wasn't expensive to do but they were also not shoddy items and all looked pretty when put together.

upwardsandonwards33 · 13/06/2017 19:24

Vouchers either done individually or ideally as a class collection are best.

Oldowl · 13/06/2017 19:47

I used to love it when someone did a collection (DC now at Secondary Sch) - so much easier and cheaper than buying individual presents.

As a teacher, I love to get a voucher. You could get flowers but a lot of teachers go away as soon as term breaks up, a plant for the garden is much better.

Imfinehowareyou · 13/06/2017 19:58

Any ideas for a vegan teacher? I don't know much about her likes/dislikes. Went for vegan wine/choc at Christmas but wondered if there was a better idea?

elfonshelf · 13/06/2017 21:02

Generally I go for booze, chocolates or nice bath stuff like Neal's Yard - that way, if it's not their thing then they can always regift - and DD draws and writes them each a card.

Other than the cards, we've never gone in for homemade things that last as I can imagine that 30 x hand painted canvasses, mugs, plates etc might be great the first year, but after that there is only so much space the poor teacher has, and it must feel awful chucking things out that a child has made for you.

longingforalife · 13/06/2017 21:55

Nothing or a letter from you or DC thanking them for their learning etc.

lostyourmittens · 13/06/2017 22:24

?A parent bought our school a coffee pod machine last year, that went down well with the teachers.

Wow. that's very generous but could it be seen as inappropriate?

Atthebottomofthegarden · 13/06/2017 23:15

Why would a coffee machine be inappropriate? Unless your teacher is a tea drinker of course...

It's unusually generous I would think but not inappropriate!

Sconesnotscones · 14/06/2017 03:50

As a teacher, my favourite presents were padded, covered coat hangers. I didn't get them often, but suddenly realised that I loved getting them (and used them),

However, having said that, good quality Belgian chocolates never went astray!

BigYellowJumper · 14/06/2017 04:04

Vouchers or handmade card from the kids. When I was a teacher those were the things I appreciated most. I can't deal with clutter but I always felt guilty getting rid of stuff people bought me. Starbucks vouchers were always VERY welcome or best of all is something the kids had made themselves. I have kept everything I ever got like that.

BradleyPooper · 14/06/2017 04:23

My dd's year 3 class was each given a piece of paper to take home by their class mum and told to draw a picture of their teacher. We have to send the pictures back to school so they can be put in a scrap book. Great idea, free of charge and a real keepsake.

CalmShambala · 14/06/2017 07:18

All the staff and teachers at our small school are wonderful so at Christmas and the end of the year we take a large cardboard cake box and make lots of small cakes for the staff room. My DC draw and write on the top of the box to say thanks. From all the comments I think this is really appreciated.

For individual teachers I will buy things like a bottle of Prosecco, wine, chocolates, nice smellies or orchid in a pot. Our class usually clubs together and buys the teacher JL vouchers and I pay into that too. I totally take my hat off to decent teachers as I would never do that job. The parents would drive me insane with their constant whining Grin

junebirthdaygirl · 14/06/2017 07:38

My favourite is always a book token..Straight to the store the day of the holidays for my summer reading. Always gave tbem to my ds teachers as can use for school if not readers. But most teachers are.I also like patio plants as e joy gardening over the Summer. Have got pretty little jug and sugar bowl sets o occasions which l stilll use all the time.
Most importantly l never mind if no present ..genuinely. l like a personal thanks or a card.

What about these personalised pencil cases? When I showed them to a teacher at my kids school they thought they were fab. beingmrsc.com/being_mrs_c/2017/05/personalised-leather-pencil-case-hope-house-press.html
