History Week - Costume Needed

ds1 school as sent a nice note home informing that the forthcoming week is history week and that it would be nice if pupils could come into school dressed in historical costume on Thursday. They also said they do not expect bought costumes, but an easily created costume will do Not very good in this department. Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.

how about some winter trousers, tucked into long grey socks with a checked shirt with sleeves rolled up with woolen waistcoat and flat cap (as a young lad from 19th century) or is it supposed to be an actual historical figure?

hi lucie, I am not sure if it is supposed to be an actual historic figure. I was thinking around the same lines as you, but with perhaps with a bit of smuged black eyeshadow or face paint on the cheeks for a chimney sweep, oh but then he would need the sweep and where would I get one.

I hate it when they do this, I am no good at sewing and dont really want to buy something. I suppose I could make a tunic out of a sheet or soemthing to dress him an ancient greek, we are greek and I have one them round headress things. Got it from the olympics when it was held in athens.

Here we go again! More flipping dressing up! What year is he in?

helbel3 · 18/03/2007 20:56

he is in year 1, it is for the whole of the early school which is reception, yr1 and yr2

I think you will have to go with the 19th century boy. You could do street urchin rather than sweep, then you wouldn't have to worry about the broom.

Yes princess you are right, will have to dig and delve for waistcoat and flat cap, shorts already sorted as they wear grey sorts for school anyway.

Going with the toga idea - you could a plain coloured bath sheet, cut a hole in the middle, leaving the sides for the shoulders and put it over like a poncho. Then he could wear a wide belt around the waist with the greek head dress thing.

hi lucie, yes the bath sheet would be a bit warmer than a thin cotton sheet especially if the weather is still baltic as it is today. God i hate it when they have these fancy dress days, it was only book week a couple of weeks ago.
