We live abroad at the minute, but are considering returning to the UK. I'm worried about my 5 year-old DS at school. He's in the equivalent of year 1, but formal education doesn't start here until they're six. He knows the first English phonics (so could sound out c-a-t), but he self-taught reading beyond that. I don't really know if he has worked out more phonics for himself or is sight reading. He sometimes pronounces sounds the Dutch way if the word is unfamiliar. He wouldn't have a clue about what a phoneme was etc.
So I thought maybe I could get some books that are about right for this stage of year 1 and see how it goes. Can anyone make some suggestions?
