What sort of thing/level should my 5 year-old be reading?

We live abroad at the minute, but are considering returning to the UK. I'm worried about my 5 year-old DS at school. He's in the equivalent of year 1, but formal education doesn't start here until they're six. He knows the first English phonics (so could sound out c-a-t), but he self-taught reading beyond that. I don't really know if he has worked out more phonics for himself or is sight reading. He sometimes pronounces sounds the Dutch way if the word is unfamiliar. He wouldn't have a clue about what a phoneme was etc.

So I thought maybe I could get some books that are about right for this stage of year 1 and see how it goes. Can anyone make some suggestions?

My DD is in the Irish equivalent of year 1. Her class use the Red Rocket Readers books and followed Jolly Phonics(some good videos on You Tube). She is on the orange level but there's others in the class who are on different levels. I dont know if this is different to the UK system, sorry.

You could look at Oxford owl. It's free and has ebooks at each level. I think it has phonics info/teaching too
Also dd's school use read write Inc and Amazon sell flashcards which dd used in reception.

To be fair, I don't know what a phoneme is either.

I bought the Julia Donaldson songbirds books (level 1 to 6 in the old ORT levels).

When my son was finished with those, I bought the Project X Alien Adventure series 1 and 2 (they go from level 7 to level 14 but there are about 55 books in total - we've only just started on series 2).
