Helpful book band/reading age chart

Found this and thought I was so useful I should share.

It shows ORT book level, colour band, NC level and school year; with whether your child is needing support, in the expected range or more able.

I found it really helpful. Smile

So now for Y2 on that chart (as and example) I would put 'support' under 6&7, 'expected' under 9-12 and 'more able' under 13&14.

Really? At DS's school they don't give Y2 above 11. Been discussed on here recently and its not the only school that does this.

Many schools haven't adapted to the new curriculum

So are you saying that many schools are telling parents their children are doing fine, when they are behind? Do I need to be worried then?

Perhaps unintentionally because they haven't realised they can't continue to use the system they've always used (almost 30 years) as it doesn't match and the big publishers aren't going to tell them

But when new NC was introduced, there were massive talk about how old NC above average was merely expected in new NC.
But in reality, just because the bar has been raised, it doesn't mean children suddenly become more able compared to those under old NC.
It must be quite difficult to change the expectation so drastically in everyday teaching for teachers? (I know they need to, but I wonder how, though.)

By doing less 'other stuff' to spend more time on English and maths, going at a faster pace and expecting more help from home. Some schools also do more practise of 'test technique'.

Teachers are familiar with book bands but book banding criteria no longer fits the National Curriculum so it means they have to reorganise all their books. Nothing to do with higher expectations more to do with different expectations.
