AIBU - school council badges...

My little girl (4) was elected to be on her school council last term, she got awarded a badge (over the moon with said item) and pinned it to her blazer.

She has cried herself to sleep (again) because the teacher has taken badge away from her...

Am I being unreasonable to think that she should have been allowed to keep the badge just not wear it on her blazer?

Is 4 a little too young to understand the concept of a school council?!

Taken away for safe keeping or as some sort of punishment?

Schools get judged on hearing children's opinions now.

Mejcin · 01/05/2017 21:02

Taken away as she needs to be voted in again, I don't think they re-use the badge.

Surely the teacher needs it back to give to the next child voted in?

Astro55 · 01/05/2017 21:04

Buy he really a replacement to keep at home -

Sorry but that's how it works at most schools

Snap8TheCat · 01/05/2017 21:05

Of course they re use the badge. It would cost them a fortune.

www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/school-council-badge

£2.25 free postage

At my children's school, they are allowed to keep their badges at the end of the year. Though if you lose it during the year, and want another one, you have to pay for a replacement.

I think that it's pretty standard to collect the badges back in.

If your DD is upset then I would do what Astro suggests and buy her a replacement to keep at home.

GreatWhites · 01/05/2017 21:11

until they all gave each other nits

Sorry, OP, YABU.

PurpleDaisies · 01/05/2017 21:14

It's a shame your dd is sad but it isn't unreasonable to reuse the badges (schools have no money these days).

Mejcin · 01/05/2017 21:16

Thanks ladies, I'm going to buy her one off eBay...I'd have happily paid for a badge she could have kept instead of seeing her so upset!

Was it explained to her that it was just a term's appt? And that it is now someone else's turn?

Mejcin · 01/05/2017 21:22

wrinkleseverywhere No it wasn't, she just doesn't grasp the concept of it...I've tried to explain but she has taken it so personally. I'm pretty sure I didn't have stuff like this bothering me when I was 4!

It's not really about school council though it is? It's about having something that identifies you as a member of a "group". 4 year olds will see this concept all the time. For example, does one team wear different colour bibs in PE? 4 year olds are also aware of the concept of "taking turns" does her class have a class bear

Your poor DD. 4 is very young to understand this kind of thing. My DS was on the school council for year 5. He was allowed to keep his badge and special tie, it's hanging on the end of his bed.
